Vehicle Overview
Mild revisions marked V70s in the 2004 model year. The mirrors were redesigned to reduce wind noise, new 15-inch alloy wheels were used and new ZF rack-and-pinion steering was installed. A new instrument panel featured watch-bezel gauge surrounds.

For 2005, new headlamps and taillamps have transparent lenses, and a waterfall-style grille is installed. The T5's turbocharged engine is larger and gets a 10-horsepower boost to 257 hp. A high-performance V70 R wagon is available.
(Skip to details on the: V70 R)

Exterior
Rounded front corners resemble those of Volvo's S80 sedan, but the rear half retains the straight lines and body profile of a traditional wagon. All V70 wagons ride a 108.5-inch wheelbase and measure 185.4 inches long overall. A moonroof is optional.

Interior
Each V70 seats up to five occupants on two front buckets and a three-place 60/40-split rear bench seat. A rear-facing third-row seat is available. Cargo capacity is 37.5 cubic feet with the backseat raised but grows to 71.5 cubic feet when the seat is folded down. A cassette/CD audio system is standard.

Under the Hood
Buyers can choose between three inline-five-cylinder engines in non-R V70s. The 2.4 wagon uses a 168-hp 2.4-liter that teams with either a five-speed-manual or five-speed-automatic transmission. The 2.5T model gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter that produces 208 hp and works only with a five-speed automatic. Sport-minded buyers may look to the T5 wagon, which is equipped with a 257-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter and a five-speed automatic.

Safety
Safety features in the V70 include antilock brakes, side-impact and side curtain-type airbags, and whiplash protection. Volvo's Dynamic Stability and Traction Control electronic stability system is standard on T5 and R models and optional on other V70s.

Driving Impressions
Volvo's thoroughly civilized and tightly constructed wagons offer engine choices to suit various driving needs. Steering is on the heavy side, but it's not ponderous. These wagons are stable on the highway and corner well, but they can't be called snappy in urban driving.

V70 R
Introduced as a 2004 model, the V70 R uses a 300-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder that teams with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic.

Minor modifications for 2005 include body-colored moldings and trim. Rear parking assist is now optional. Volvo also offers a high-performance S60 R sedan with the same drivetrain. Back to top
