10 Biggest News Stories of the Month: Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride Throw Down on Outback

2020 Hyundai Palisade

To appropriate a popular Thai expression in reference to a pair of South Korean-made SUVs (don’t bother thinking about it too hard), the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride are … same, same, but different. They’re both all new for the 2020 model year; both come from parent company Hyundai-Kia; both are named for exclusive, highfalutin places in the western U.S.; they share underpinnings and many parts; and they’re priced similarly, starting at just less than $33,000, including a destination charge. And they’re both incredibly popular among Cars.com readers.

So how does someone shopping for a new family-fun-hauler tip the scales toward either the Palisade and the Telluride? It really comes down to the fine details in terms of features and creature comforts, and how those accommodations stack up against one another for your particular punch list of non-negotiables, nice-to-haves and couldn’t-care-lesses. In our No. 1 story for the entire month of September, Cars.com reviewer Brian Wong breaks down the Hyundai and Kia cousins’ offerings trim level by trim level to help you decide.

Also making the play for the top spot, but falling just short, was another family vehicle with legions of stans, the Subaru Outback. And while the Outback is perennially popular, the wagon/SUV’s faithful have a very compelling reason to check out the redesigned-for-2020 version. According to Cars.com reviewer Aaron Bragman, it’s the best Outback that Subaru has ever produced.

“Two decades ago, when Subaru took its Legacy wagon and jacked it up, slapped on plastic cladding and gave it an outdoorsy name, nobody imagined the Subaru Outback would become the automaker’s most beloved, best-selling model,” Bragman writes. “I drove an all-new sixth-generation 2020 Outback in Northern California at a Subaru media event, and all I can say is this: If you’re a fan of the current Outback, wait till you get behind the wheel of this one — you’re going to absolutely love it.”

The praise doesn’t stop there. Be sure to read Bragman’s full review via the link below to our No. 2 most popular article in September.

Rounding out the top five are two entries from our 2019 Mid-Size Truck Challenge, an exhaustive, weeklong multicar comparison that pitted a quartet of popular pickups against one another in a host of subjective and objective categories — from driving-loop impressions to bed measurements to loaded acceleration and braking. Competitors included the 2019 Ford Ranger, 2019 GMC Canyon, 2019 Honda Ridgeline and 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The surprising — and, for some, controversial — victor was the Ridgeline, which snatched the win away from the Ranger by a slim points margin. Check out the full rankings from the Challenge in our results story, which comes in at No. 3 for the month, and also see which truck’s bed and tailgate earned our judges’ highest endorsement in our No. 4 most-read article. And finally, at No. 5, find out three things you should know if you’re considering the 2020 Accord Hybrid as your next car.
