10 Biggest News Stories of the Month: Toyota Land Cruiser Cruises Past Hyundai Ioniq 5

The modern world’s millions of miles of paved roadways enable us to drive nearly anywhere with relative speed, safety and smooth-riding comfort — so why would anyone ever eschew the asphalt in favor of rock crawling, overlanding and water fording? Well … they don’t, at least not very many. But whether it’s our good old American adventurousness or some looming fear that we’re all going to be living in some dystopian Mad Max scenario, car shoppers’ “better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it” attitude may be as strong as ever. So, in the name of Furiosa, are we ever glad to see the return of the Toyota Land Cruiser for 2024 after two years off the grid for the off-roader.

In one of Cars.com’s most popular news articles of the past month, we note some observations we made upon seeing the fully redesigned full-size SUV live at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show in February. The Land Cruiser’s time off did it good, as it returns ready for the off-road, boasting a body-on-frame platform shared with Toyota’s other trucks, while getting narrower and shorter in length for better negotiating tight, rocky terrain. That’s in addition to protective plating and a sizable skid plate for undercarriage protection, as well as easy-to-wipe-down plastic and rubber interior appointments that’ll make cleanup less of a chore after hitting the dusty trail.

On the opposite side of the SUV spectrum is the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, which returns for its second consecutive year as the winner of Cars.com’s annual award for the Best Electric Vehicle. The Ioniq 5 scored with our judges for its roomy interior, exciting exterior styling, user-friendly onboard tech, adequately quick acceleration, speedy charging capability, more-than-accommodating driving range on a full charge, sub-$45,000 starting price and all-around livability. To reclaim its top spot for the new model year, the Ioniq 5 had to charge past finalists the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck and Lucid Air luxury sedan, as well as a gang of additional nominees.
