It won't go on sale for a few more months, but Volkswagen announced pricing for its redesigned 2012 Passat sedan at $19,995, excluding $770 for destination.  That’s $7,200 less than the 2010 Passat that preceded it, and it’s part of the German car company’s new strategy of making the brand more mainstream in America.

In terms of base pricing, the VW is cheaper than the Honda Accord ($21,180), Nissan Altima ($20,270) and Toyota Camry ($20,195), though the Ford Fusion ($19,850), Kia Optima ($18,995) and Hyundai Sonata ($19,395) are more affordable.

For the price, you get a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine rated at 22/31 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission and 21/32 mpg with a manual. That mileage isn’t competitive with most other sedans in the class; most competitors get 1-2 mpg better on the highway.

The base S trim comes with some unexpected niceties, though, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, steering-wheel audio controls and an eight-way manual adjustable driver’s seat. A six-speed manual transmission is standard; a six-speed automatic is a $2,695 option that is part of an appearance package. That's an expensive way of getting a mainstream option most buyers will opt for. VW usually charges $1,000 to move up from a manual to an automatic as a stand-alone option.

A 140-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel (TDI) is available for $25,995. The model gets an estimated 31/43 mpg with either a manual or automatic transmission. The fuel-efficient TDI is competitively priced to pique the interest of shoppers looking at midsize hybrid sedans: The Ford Fusion Hybrid ($28,600), Toyota Camry Hybrid ($27,050) and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid ($25,795) are similarly priced and return similar gas mileage.

A 280-hp V-6 engine will get 20/28 mpg, which is competitive with other V-6-equipped sedans in the class. The V-6 model is pricey, though, starting at $28,995. That model is similarly equipped to the previous-generation Passat – you could think of it as its modern successor if you’re accustomed to more luxurious VWs.

On Tuesday, Volkswagen began production of the new Passat at its new and only car plant in the U.S. The model is expected to go on sale in September.
