Summer came to a close, and car shoppers continued to snap up utility vehicles of every stripe in August. Fifteen of the top 19 fastest-selling cars last month were SUVs, wagons or minivans compared to 15 out of 22 in July.
The 2015 BMW X5 (which is virtually unchanged from the revamped 2014 pictured above) unseated the smaller 2015 Porsche Macan from the top perch — tied with the 2015 Toyota Tacoma — but shoppers still covet the Macan; it made our list taking just nine days to sell from the time it arrives on a Porsche lot to the time it goes home with its new owner.
Overall the average time it took to sell any new 2014 or 2015 car was 69 days, up barely from 68 days in July but still a week longer than August 2013's average of 62 days.
As more 2015 models flow onto dealer lots it is harder to deliver our slowest-selling list, which doesn't include 2014s if there is a 2015 version for sale at the same time or models that have been discontinued.
That makes the state of the cars on this list pretty dire indeed, and we'd expect them to have significant wiggle room if you wanted to negotiate on one.
Our list of picks with the same deal potential is extremely varied, ranging from one of the most affordable cars you can buy — before any discounts — in the Scion iQ to sporty sedans that received extensive overhauls in the Infiniti Q50 and Cadillac CTS.

The Fastest- and Slowest-Selling Cars list reports the average number of days it takes to sell models from the day they arrive on the lot until the final paperwork is signed by a buyer. This is not a days-of-inventory list like you may find on other websites. With lots mostly clear of 2013 models, we look exclusively at 2014 and 2015 models.
For the fastest sellers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, ultra-high-performance cars and others that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. To highlight all slow sellers, slowest sellers have no such threshold.
Our Picks highlight cars that take a significant time before they're sold and might be overlooked by shoppers. Dealers could be more motivated to sell these cars.
