2020 3-Row SUV Challenge Video: Hyundai Palisade Fends Off Fierce Competition

Three-row SUVs have been persistently popular over the last decade, and with sales continuing to grow, automakers pay big attention to this class — so much so that, since we did this test two years ago, we’ve added three brand-new vehicles, a full redesign and a refreshed vehicle, all of which participated in our latest class-spanning multicar comparison test. The showdown features seven vehicles starting with the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, the 2020 Ford Explorer, the 2020 Honda Pilot, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade, the 2020 Kia Telluride, the 2020 Subaru Ascent and our champion from last time, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas.

With seven vehicles in our 2020 3-Row SUV Challenge, it was a pretty big field, but there are a few that weren’t involved in our testing that we do want to address. The Dodge Durango, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan Pathfinder either don’t sell enough or haven’t been updated recently enough to really be considered in this test — but the big omission would be the Toyota Highlander. The Highlander is set to be redesigned for 2020, but wasn’t quite ready when we conducted our Challenge, and we don’t blame Toyota for not participating with a 2019 model as it likely wouldn’t have done very well. And we should also add the Mazda CX-9 to that list, which for one reason or another didn’t make it on our roster.

Besides, we had seven vehicles in this test, and to go up to 11 or 12 vehicles, that would’ve been difficult to do. These seven SUVs made for a good competitive lineup, as it was representative of the class as the major players in the industry; these are the ones that shoppers are going to look at and consider the most.
