You know the old saying, “What’s good for the Mazda CX-9, CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 is good for the CX-30?” No? Weird. Anyway, Mazda evidently discovered somewhere along the line that its turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine — already used in the CX-9 and CX-5 SUVs, the Mazda6 sedan and the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback — would fit under the CX-30’s hood, too, so, why not, right?

Powertrain

Power figures are unchanged from the engine’s other applications, meaning the 2021 CX-30 will be available with 250 horsepower and 320 pounds-feet of torque, assuming 93-octane premium gas is used; switch to regular gas and those numbers drop to 227 hp and 310 pounds-feet. Either way, those are impressive figures for a small SUV like the CX-30. The CX-30 2.5 Turbo will also come standard with all-wheel drive.

Exterior

Like the recently announced Mazda3 2.5 Turbo, the CX-30 2.5 Turbo will have subtle exterior differences from its less powerful siblings to signify what lurks under the hood. Those include a “Turbo” badge on the liftgate, black 18-inch wheels, black side mirrors and larger tailpipes.

Pricing and Release Date

The CX-30 2.5 Turbo should be on sale by the end of 2020. Mazda says pricing and other details will be available in “the coming months,” but expect the CX-30 2.5 Turbo to cost significantly more than a base CX-30 and to be the most expensive CX-30 in the lineup. The Mazda3 2.5 Turbo is the most expensive Mazda3 available, priced from just over $30,000 to nearly $35,000 before additional options. A fully loaded CX-30 2.5 Turbo likely will be more.
