Jeep parent automaker Stellantis is recalling more than 80,600 examples of the brand’s Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs over an issue with the rear coil springs.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-23 Grand Cherokee Ls and model-year 2022-23 Grand Cherokees. The rear coil springs may have been installed incorrectly and may detach while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of a crash.

To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect and repair the rear coil spring assembly for free. Interim letters notifying owners of the issue are expected to be mailed Feb. 12; a second letter will be sent out once a remedy is available, likely in March. In the meantime, owners with further questions may contact Stellantis at 800-853-1403 (its number for this recall is 20D), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
