Audi announced the arrival of its first all-electric vehicle back in September, and today we’re learning more about the 2019 e-tron’s capabilities. First and foremost: The new five-seat SUV will have an EPA-estimated electric range of 204 miles when it goes on sale later in the spring.
All e-trons will have a 95-kilowatt-hour battery pack under the floor that has its own temperature-management system to recover heat waste and help condition the cabin as well as extend range. Audi says horsepower ranges from 355 to 402 — depending on whether Boost Mode is engaged — and the automaker estimates its zero-to-60-mph time at 5.5 seconds. All-wheel drive is standard.
DC fast-charging capability is also standard. Audi says 10 minutes of plug-in time at a public fast charger will get you 54 miles of range; 30 minutes of charge time increases that to 163 miles. For those who want to charge at home, Audi is teaming up with Amazon Home Services to provide in-home installation of a Level 2 charging system, which will enable the e-tron to be completely charged in approximately nine hours.
Compared with other luxury electric SUVs, the e-tron’s electric range estimate lags behind the Tesla Model X, which has a base range of 238 miles, and the Jaguar I-Pace, which has a base range of 234 miles.
The e-tron begins deliveries in May and starts at $75,795, including a $995 destination charge but excluding the $7,500 maximum federal tax credit. The Model X starts at $83,200 including destination, but its tax credit has begun to expire; it’s currently only $3,750 and will continue to drop since Tesla reached the 200,000 sales mark. The I-Pace starts at $70,495, including destination, and is still eligible for the full credit.
