RIM, the company that makes the Blackberry smartphone, has just purchased QNX, a software company that specializes in the automotive sector. QNX works on navigation and other in-car systems, and from reports it seems like RIM’s acquistion will lead to future integration of the email-capable devices.
Technology blog Mashable posits that this could lead to services similar to Ford’s latest Sync layout, which will go on sale this summer in the 2011 Ford Edge.
We’re not sure if the generally straightforward, email-centric Blackberry is the type of device that translates well to car systems because its users love it for its simplicity and ease of typing. But RIM says it is going through with the purchase for future “unannounced product plans” and to provide “long-term synergies” which sounds like it wants to integrate future Blackberry products into cars to us.
