Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Reduces Powertrain Warranty to 60,000 Miles

A second automaker in less than three months has trimmed the mileage limits on its warranty. Following a similar announcement by GM in March, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will reduce its powertrain warranty to 60,000 miles from the previous 100,000 miles on its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands. FCA’s Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands have separate warranty provisions, as do its diesel vehicles; those have no changes.

FCA made the move “following changes already made by competitors” so its cars are “more consistent with industry practices,” the automaker said in a statement to Cars.com.

Previously five years or 100,000 miles, the powertrain warranty will be five years or 60,000 miles beginning with the 2016 model year, FCA said. The policy expires at whatever mark you hit first — mileage or length of time since you bought the car — so FCA’s reduction only affects owners who drive more than 12,000 miles a year. FCA’s three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, which covers most non-powertrain parts, remains the same.

Long-haul drivers may be disappointed, but the reductions by FCA and GM align both automakers with Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Volkswagen. Among non-luxury brands, Hyundai-Kia and Mitsubishi have the longest warranties.
