Ford’s long-rumored SUV with a Mustang-themed name will get exactly that. Witness the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric SUV that’s likely to share styling cues but not underlying architecture with the current sports car.

That car, by the way, debuted back in late 2013. Rather than sharing its platform with the current ’Stang or its next generation, the Mustang Mach-E SUV rides “a new all-electric architecture,” spokeswoman Emma Bergg told Cars.com. That aligns with Ford’s announcement last year that it would adopt five global platforms moving forward: a truck-based platform, three car-based platforms and a battery-electric platform.
In case it wasn’t already obvious: The Mustang Mach-E employs the last one. It also carries a name, Mach-E, heretofore unused by Ford in relation to any Mustang. Up until now, Mach solely meant the Mach 1, a performance-enhanced Mustang variant that appeared from 1969-78 and then again from 2003-04.
Ford didn’t reveal much else about the Mach-E today, apart from a teaser video with design sketches that indicate dramatic rear fenders and a fastback roofline — cues shared with the Mustang sports car — plus what appears to be a Mustang-inspired grille between light-piped headlights shaped in a downward-facing “E.”
The Mustang Mach-E debuts Sunday in Los Angeles, just before things kick off for the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. At approximately 6:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, Ford will open online reservations for the Mach-E. Those reservations require a refundable $500 deposit, and you’ll be able to finalize your configuration when the ordering window opens “next year,” Ford says.
There’s no word on pricing yet, but all-electric cars should easily have the battery capacity to qualify for a maximum $7,500 federal plug-in vehicle tax credit, and Ford has plenty of runway before it reaches the federal cap — 200,000 cumulative sales per automaker for all plug-in cars — before that credit runs out.
