Ankeny, Iowa — a suburb of Des Moines — has its city crews using garlic salt to de-ice the roads this winter. The salt was destined for a landfill when local spice producer Tone Brothers Inc. decided to donate it to the city.

Road crews mix the garlic salt with regular road salt to get twice the bang for their buck. There have been a few unintended consequences, though.

Public works crews report — and we are not making this up — the road salt is making them especially hungry on the job and causing dogs to attack their pants when they come home.
