The verdict: BMW is way late to the three-row SUV party, but its new model is worth the wait. The 2019 BMW X7 shines in luxury, comfort, space and technology. We tested a six-passenger model with second-row captain’s chairs and it earned straight A grades; its easy-access Latch anchors and ample room made car seat installation a breeze.
Does it fit three car seats? No

- Latch: In the second row, the lower anchors are exposed for easy access and connection. The two top tether anchors are on the floor behind each captain’s chair. Usually, this is not a good spot because the anchors could be overlooked. In this case, however, they are clearly marked and large, so they’re easy to find and use.
- Infant: The seat installed easily and the 5-foot-6-inch-tall front passenger had legroom to spare.
- Rear-facing convertible: Latch connection was easy and, again, there was plenty of room.
- Forward-facing convertible: After raising the head restraint and removing our model’s clip-on head-restraint pillows, the seat fit well. Connection to both the lower Latch anchors and upper tether anchor was easy.
- Booster: After again raising the head restraint and removing the pillows, the seat fit well. The second row’s stable buckles should make it easy for kids to buckle up independently.
- Third-row access: The second-row captain’s chairs power forward and up, creating a large opening. This won’t work when a car seat is installed, however.
- Third-row Latch: The third row has two sets of lower anchors, and they’re also exposed. The two top tether anchors sit halfway down the seatback and are easy to find and use.
- Forward-facing convertible, third row: The fixed head restraint is small enough so it doesn’t prevent the convertible from sitting flat on the seatback. Latch and tether connection were easy.
- Booster, third row: Again, the fixed head restraint doesn’t prevent the booster from sitting flat on the seatback. The third row’s stable buckle stalks should make them easy for kids to grasp and use.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide Classic Connect 30 infant-safety seat, a Britax Marathon convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.
We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat, and that Latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, including the weight of the child and the weight of the seat itself.
