Hyundai Hopes Sonata + More Stuff + Price Cuts = Sedan Sales

2018 Hyundai Sonata

As sales of mid-size sedans continue to get hammered, Hyundai is piling on some extra features and cutting the price on new 2018 Sonata "Plus" value editions that it hopes add up to increased sales.

Hyundai says that the equipment and pricing of mid-model year value edition vehicles can equal a discount of as much as $980, but the best change Hyundai has made is making safety and driver assistance vehicle tech features, including automatic emergency braking, more available at a better price.

The Plus versions of Hyundai's Sonata are on sale now and affect most of the trim levels, though not the base SE or high-mileage Eco. Here's how the new Hyundai Sonatas add up (all prices including $885 destination):

  • Sonata SEL Plus remains priced at $24,585 but gets a sportier front bumper and grille, front seat dual automatic climate control, console-mounted rear climate vents, wireless phone charging, a heated steering wheel and an auto up/down driver's window.
  • A Hyundai Sonata SEL Plus with Tech Package is new, priced at $25,185 and includes added safety features with a front collision system with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and an electronic parking brake. (This is the best value of the bunch for features and safety.)
  • Sport Plus gets a $400 price cut to $25,685 and gets a sportier front bumper and grille, dual automatic climate control, console-mounted rear climate vents, wireless phone charging, a heated steering wheel and an auto up/down driver's window.
  • A Hyundai Sonata Sport Plus with Tech Package is new, priced, at $26,285 and includes a front collision system with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and an electronic parking brake.
