As of right now, Nissan appears to be looking at five color options for the new Leaf all-electric vehicle: silver, black, red, white and the familiar aqua blue we’ve seen in preview pics.
Nissan’s reservation page says that these color options may not be the final colors but will help the automaker determine which samples are most popular. It’s also using its registration process to figure out how people plan to incorporate the Leaf in their daily transportation routines. How far drivers plan to take the car, where they will park and charge it, what features they’ll want — Nissan appears to want data on all of this.
Not all is rosy for interested Leaf buyers. The Hybrid Owners of America says many of those who first signed up for information on the Leaf via Nissan’s website weren’t alerted to the $99 reservation window. By the time they did try to sign up, the site was no longer available. Cars.com senior editor David Thomas also signed up for the same mailing list and after checking his junk mail folder, didn’t appear to get an alert from Nissan, either.
As D-Day for mass-market electric vehicles draws near, Nissan is no doubt interested in every tidbit that can help make car buyers comfortable with this unfamiliar technology — down to body color. But it will have to make sure the early adopters feel like part of the process.
