Memorial Day to Set Tone for Summer Travel

Gas hit another record high today at $3.87 a gallon — that’s up 4 cents in one day!

Every news program, website and newspaper is talking about the holiday travel season kicking off this weekend. AAA says travel will be down 1% this weekend compared to last year. 1%? Gas prices are up nearly 20% since then.

If the average family is driving 600 miles round trip and their vehicle gets 20 mpg, the round trip will cost $116.10 in gas, or $19.50 more than it would have last year. While 20% is a significant increase, when looking at a $20 bill it doesn’t seem like enough to stop a family from hitting Disney World or grandma’s house. Plus, with gas prices only looking to rise from here, this might be the cheapest weekend to travel this summer.
