The Mitsubishi Outlander has never been a favorite among Cars.com editors, but a redesign for 2022 increased its appeal. It looks like the new plug-in hybrid version of the SUV is also getting better. The 2023 Outlander PHEV offers 38 miles of all-electric range from its 350-volt, 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack — 14 more miles than the previous model. When it goes on sale in November, it’ll have a base price of $41,190; the outgoing model started at around $38,000 (all prices include destination).

The Outlander PHEV’s battery pack pairs with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an extra-large gas tank. Combined, Mitsubishi says the SUV gets 420 miles of driving range — a 40% improvement over the previous model’s 320-mile range. While the 2023 version has more all-electric range than last year’s 24-mile estimate, the new model has a 64 mpg-equivalent rating, less than the previous version’s 74 mpg-e rating.

Although the new PHEV is based on the redesigned Outlander, some things carry over from the old PHEV. Like the outgoing model, the 2023 Outlander PHEV uses an all-wheel-drive system that employs electric motors on the front and rear axles; Mitsubishi said total horsepower has increased to 248 hp — up from the previous generation’s 221 hp.

It also again has a standard onboard DC fast charger; Mitsubishi says the 2023 Outlander PHEV is the only non-luxury-brand PHEV in the U.S. to offer fast-charging capability. The SUV can be charged to 80% in about 38 minutes via the fast charger. The automaker did not give charge times for Level 1 or Level 2 charging.

There aren’t too many three-row PHEVs on the market, but the Outlander competes against the Kia Sorento PHEV, which for 2023 is only available in fully loaded SX-P trim for $51,095. EPA estimates for the 2023 Sorento PHEV aren’t yet available, but the 2022 model has a 79 mpg-e rating and 32 miles of all-electric range.

Mitsubishi says the 2023 Outlander PHEV will go on sale in “select markets” starting in November, followed later by availability across the whole country. Note that prices do not include any applicable federal tax credits, which are changing.
