We agree that there are already way too many versions of “CSI” on CBS, but that should in no way color your opinion of this Crime Scene Investigation unit.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals used the third annual Veterinary Forensic Sciences Conference in Orlando to debut its “Animal CSI” response vehicle. A customized 2010 Subaru Outback, the vehicle comes with modifications such as special lighting, a two-way radio, computer, exam table, roof rack and refrigerated storage unit to keep evidence.

The vehicle will primarily be used to examine evidence from crime scenes where animal cruelty is involved. Based in Gainesville, Fla., the unit will assist local agencies across the state in collecting evidence against those involved with harming animals.

Members of ASPCA said that while there wasn’t necessarily an increase in animal cruelty, more people are now reporting it (possibly in light of high-profile cases like NFL quarterback Michael Vick’s dog-fighting scandal). Veterinary forensic examiners need new tools to gather evidence in order to prosecute, and the modified Outback is a clear example of what is needed.

Obviously, we think this is great — especially since David Caruso is in no way involved.
