Key Points

  • Stellantis is discontinuing its Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid models.
  • All three vehicles were plagued by problems that lead to multiple recalls to address serious issues like fire risks and loss of drive power.
  • The company’s previously announced hybrid and range-extended electric vehicles are still moving forward as planned.

As first reported by The Drive, Stellantis is discontinuing all of its existing plug-in hybrid models; the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Jeep Wrangler 4xe are all being dropped for the 2026 model year. The company earlier released information on 2026 versions of the Pacifica Hybrid and Grand Cherokee 4xe, but those are now canceled. Regarding other Stellantis PHEVs, the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s PHEV variant had already been discontinued for 2026, the entire Dodge Hornet lineup (which also included a PHEV) had already been suspended for 2026 due to tariff issues, and Jeep also canceled plans for the Gladiator 4xe in September 2025.

The discontinuations affect only the above PHEV models; previously announced Stellantis electrified vehicles like the regular-hybrid 2026 Jeep Cherokee, the range-extended electric 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUV and the Ram 1500 REV pickup (which was originally announced as the Ramcharger) are still in the works.

PHEVs in general have exhibited more reliability issues in recent years than conventional internal-combustion engines — Consumer Reports’ latest Annual Auto Reliability Survey indicated that PHEVs and EVs average about 80% more problems than ICE cars. Stellantis’ PHEVs have been particularly trouble-prone, with the company issuing multiple recalls to address serious issues like fire risks and a glitchy Wrangler 4xe software update that caused major powertrain malfunctions like sudden power losses for many owners.

Cars.com owned a long-term 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk, and we experienced several of these issues. Our test vehicle was frequently at the dealership for repairs, and we avoided charging the hybrid battery for three or so months and parked the vehicle outside (per Jeep’s recommendations) to minimize fire risks.

The Trump administration’s discontinuation of the federal tax credit for electrified vehicles as of Sept. 30, 2025, made all plug-in vehicles less compelling, as well. Last fall, Stellantis offered buyers and lessees a bonus-cash equivalent to the tax credits its EVs and PHEVs were eligible for, but only on vehicles that were already in dealer inventories.
