Toyota held a news conference today in San Diego to dispute the story of Jim Sikes, the driver of the runaway Prius documented last week.
Toyota’s engineers had a list of reasons why they couldn’t verify Sikes’ stories, which we detail below. However, they do say the brakes were severely damaged. The company’s findings come after government officials also could not find fault with the vehicle.
The accelerator pedal is operating normally.
The start/stop button shut down the car when it was depressed continuously for three seconds as it was designed to do.
The neutral position on the transmission is clearly marked with a big N.
There were no trouble codes in the car’s computer.
The car is designed in a way that the brake pedal and accelerator can’t work at the same time.
