For all the buzz about electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles that drive themselves, manufacturers continue to satisfy the need for speed with performance models powered by gasoline and piloted by humans. Audi, for example, has resurrected the TT RS coupe for 2018. The RS comes with a 400-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine and delivers it through a seven-speed automatic transmission to an all-wheel-drive system tuned for performance driving.
Giving it proper nourishment for peak performance requires high-octane premium gas. That premium fuel is going to cost more this week, however.
Average prices for regular and premium gasoline inched up a penny over the past week, though several states in the southern half of the country saw higher increases. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report said Thursday the national average was $2.88 for regular and $3.42 for premium, the second week in a row for higher prices. Diesel fuel was unchanged at $3.17.
Here's what it would cost to fill the 14.5-gallon tank of the TT RS based on AAA's prices:
- Using the national average of $3.42 for premium, a fill-up would cost $49.59.
- In Charleston, S.C., where the average price of premium was $3.16, the cost drops to less than $46.
- In San Francisco, premium was $4.07 on Thursday, and the cost increases to $59.02.
- With an EPA-combined city/highway estimate of 22 mpg, the TT RS has a 319-mile range. On the highway (EPA estimate of 29 mpg), the range would stretch to more than 400 miles.
Pump prices were largely unchanged or fell by small amounts the past week in several Western states, including California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. It was a different story in the Southeast and Southwest, where increases of 3 cents or more were common. Florida saw the biggest increase for regular at 9 cents. In Michigan, where prices gyrate on almost a weekly basis, regular bounced 8 cents higher.
Regular and premium gas were 62 cents higher Thursday than a year ago, and diesel was 73 cents higher. Hawaii unsurprisingly had the highest average price for regular, $3.76, followed by California at $3.66. Alabama had the lowest average, $2.55. Mississippi and South Carolina, both at $2.57, were the only other states under $2.60.
If you own an Audi TT RS and you're wondering where to fill up, then, the answer lies in the Southeast.
