What’s New With Toyota in 2019?

A number of Toyota vehicles are undergoing updates for the 2020 model year, and the automaker is adding one hugely significant new vehicle in the resurrected Supra coupe. The hybrid version of the redesigned compact Corolla sedan also will be available for the first time in the U.S., while the popular Highlander SUV received a full redesign. Most of the other updates are tech-focused as Toyota adds smartphone connectivity features like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to more of its lineup, though there are some cosmetic changes, as well.

Here’s what’s coming soon to Toyota dealerships:

2020 Toyota Corolla

Competes with: Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, Volkswagen Jetta

Looks like: A so, so, so trunkdafied take on the new-for-2019 Corolla Hatchback

Drivetrain: 139-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder with continuously variable automatic transmission or 169-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with six-speed manual or CVT automatic

2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Competes with: Honda Insight, Hyundai Ioniq, Toyota Prius; possibly the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf

Looks like: The 2020 Corolla with some blue accents on its badging, because blue means “hybrid”

Drivetrain: 121 total system hp from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors; continuously variable automatic transmission

2020 Toyota Highlander

Competes with: Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Volkswagen Atlas

Looks like: Still conservative but more sculpted, with a cleaner face and broader, upswept haunches

Drivetrain: 295-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission or gas-electric hybrid system with 2.5-liter four-cylinder, two electric motors and 240 total hp; front- or all-wheel drive

Hits dealerships: December 2019 for gas model; February 2020 for hybrid

2019 Toyota Prius AWD-e

Competes with: Honda Insight, Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

Looks like: Current Prius, but fewer sharp elbows in new front and rear

Drivetrain: Gas-electric hybrid system with 1.8-liter gas engine and a pair of electric motor/generators; combined hybrid system output for 2018 was 121 hp for front-wheel drive; all-wheel-drive adds electric motor on rear axle for traction as needed; continuously variable automatic transmission

2020 Toyota Sequoia

Competes with: Nissan Armada, Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition

Looks like: The current-generation Sequoia, though the new TRD Pro trim level gets a few more cool bits to distinguish itself

Drivetrain: 5.7-liter V-8 with 381 hp and 401 pounds-feet of torque paired with a six-speed automatic transmission; rear- or four-wheel drive

Hits dealerships: Mid-to-late 2019

2020 Toyota Supra

Competes with: Infiniti Q60, Lexus RC, Nissan 370Z

Looks like: The next hero car in the “Fast and the Furious” movie franchise

Drivetrain: 335-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine; eight-speed automatic transmission; rear-wheel drive

2020 Toyota Tacoma

Competes with: Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier

Looks like: Quite similar to current generation

Powertrains: 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder (159 hp, 180 pounds-feet of torque) or 3.5-liter V-6 (278 hp, 265 pounds-feet of torque) both mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (six-speed manual is optional); rear- or four-wheel drive

2020 Toyota Tundra

Competes with: Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Nissan Titan

Looks like: A Toyota Tundra

Powertrains: 4.6-liter V-8 (310 hp, 327 pounds-feet) or 5.7-liter V-8 (381 hp, 401 pounds-feet) with a six-speed automatic transmission for both; rear- or four-wheel drive
