What's the Mid-Size Sedan Capital of America?

CARS.COM — Mid-size sedans are the vanilla ice cream of the automotive world. But plain as they may be, drivers have a big appetite for them and they're the most popular type of car sold in the U.S. Who's scooping them up?

To find out, we looked at Cars.com's inventory of new mid-size sedans currently on sale* (sorry Dodge Avenger... actually, I'm not sorry at all), excluding luxury models and hybrids. We also limited our search to U.S. markets (a city and its suburbs) with more than 500,000 residents.

Next, we measured Cars.com users' site activity to gauge the interest level of shoppers in each city. According to our scores, here are the top 20 cities where mid-size sedans are the most popular:

3. Baltimore
4. Louisville, Ky.
5. Chattanooga, Tenn.
6. Milwaukee
7. Dallas
8. Lexington, Ky.
9. Charlotte, N.C.
10. Atlanta
11. Cincinnati

15. Fort Wayne, Ind.
16. Columbus, Ohio

19. Myrtle Beach, S.C.

On the flip side, the following cities below have low mid-size sedan popularity:

1. Traverse City, Mich.
2. Burlington, Vt.
3. Harlingen, Texas
4. Fargo, N.D.
5. Honolulu
6. Albuquerque, N.M.
7. Portland, Maine
8. Bakersfield, Calif.
9. Johnstown, Pa.
10. Tyler, Texas

This is the second time that Chicago has come out on top, after we crowned it the minivan capital of the U.S. It looks like Chicagoans love their family-friendly vehicles in different shapes and sizes. 

*The models included were the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat.
