I have had my 535xi for three weeks. I test drove Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity, Cadillac and Acura before I drove the BMW. All of these cars are excellent cars and I could have been quite satisfied with any of them. However, when I drove the BMW, they all faded in comparison. BMW got it right. The car has all of the acceleration, handling, and manners that the other cars aspire to but don't attain. I didn't think that the BMW would be that much better than the competition but it is by far the best driving car that I have ever had the opportunity to own. Trust me, if you are going to objectively look at the competition for this car, drive the other cars first...because, once you get behind the wheel of the BMW, you won't desire anything else. I feel incredibly comfortable with the vehicle. I'd love to see a bit more information about the car's engine such as temperature, oil pressure etc. however, that is really nitpicking.
Idrive is quite intuitive after a bit of practice. It is certainly undeserving of all of the criticism that some of the professional reviewers have bestowed upon it. The voice command system for navigation, stereo, and bluetooth integration is sweet and obviates the need in many cases to even use the Idrive controls. I can speak into the system and it will allow me to choose radio stations, destinations and make phone calls with voice commands.
The car is such a pleasure to drive that I look to take the "long" way home so that I have a just a bit more fun with the car. The seating and finish of the interior is incredible. If there is one complaint that I have about this car (and all of the current vehicles that I test drove) is the inability to see the back end of the car. I had been in a Mercedes ML and you knew exactly where the tail of the car was located. This current generation of cars doesn't allow you to see the end of the trunk when backing into a parking space. I probably should have purchased the optional parking sensor package.
The New York Times called it perfect. I agree with them and BMW when it claims that the car is the Ultimate Driving Machine.
