A Great, But Leaky Vehicle
I bought my 4X2 Patriot Sport in October 2007 and when I first washed it guess what? It leaked from the cargo area dome light. According to a Jeep forum, the issue is not very rare. I had to take it to the dealer twice to fix it and they had to replace the headliner as it got a water stain. Ohter than that it climbs over street curbs easily and rides over bumps smoother than a full size truck.

Great car. I have the manual shift which I REALLY like. The manual shifts are hard to find & they get better mileage.

I AGREE WITH THE EDITORS - BASE MODEL IS A BARGAIN
GREAT BUY - LOTS OF VALUE I test drove many comparable cars, Honda CRV, Toyota Matrix, Dodge caliber - the base model patriot was by far the best value. I did not like the styling at first, but its growing on me because everthing else about is so good.

WHY NOT A REAL CHEROKEE?
LIKE SEVERAL OTHERS WHO HAVE COMMENTED ON THIS VEHICLE, I HAD A CHEROKEE. HAD HOPED THE COMMANDER WOULD BE A CHEROKEE REPLACEMENT. BUT IT FAILED. MUCH TO LIKE ON THE PATRIOT, AND I BELIEVE IT IS THE CLOSEST TO A CHEROKEE OUT THERE, BUT DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY JEEP KEEPS FAILING TO IGNORE THE DESIRE FOR AN UPDATED CHEROKEE. WHY ARE THEY BLIND TO THE SUCCESS THEY HAD? SOME DON'T LIKES. REAR VIEW IMPEDED BY REAR PILLARS AND SMALL REAR WINDOW. WOULD PREFER SPARE ON REAR OUTSIDE MOUNT. REAR AND FRONT SEATS SHOULD HAVE ADJUSTABLE HEADRESTS THAT LOWER IN TO SEAT. NEED LARGER GAS TANK. NEED FRONT BUMPER THAT CAN MOUNT WINCH. NEED ROOF RACK THAT HAS FRONT RACK FURTHER FORWARD SO CANOES ETC CAN BE CARRIED. NEED STORAGE DRAWERS UNDER FRONT SEATS. FEMALES NEED MIRRORS WITH LIGHTS. SKIP THE BIG SPEAKERS IN DOORS-ADD MORE STORAGE. HOW ABOUT THE BEER COOLER AS IN CALIBER, OR HOT/COLD DRINK THING FROM SEBRING.

IT REPLACED MY CHEROKEE
I LOVED MY 2000 JEEP CHEROKEE, BUT COULDN'T AFFORD PUTTING GAS INTO IT. THIS JEEP GETS GREAT GAS MILEAGE AND HAS THE GREAT LOOKS OF MY OLD CHEROKEE. THE INTERIOR IS VERY STYLISH AND THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM INSIDE FOR CARRYING PASSENGERS AND CARGO. THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE IS VERY NECESSARY HERE IN NEW ENGLAND. ACTUALLY, IT HAS MORE OF AN ALL WHEEL DRIVE TRANSMISSION. WITH A LIFETIME GUARRANTEE ON THE DRIVE TRAIN, ILL HAVE THIS VEHICLE FOR A LONG TIME.

nice for the price
Replaced my gas guzzeling pick up truck with this 4x4. Got the manual shift and am averaging 22 mpg in city driving (and I do have a bit of a lead foot). The vehicle shifts smoothly, rides great and I love the mileage. We've had a lot of snow too and the stability control with the 4WD works great. I got all the bells and whistles I wanted on it and walked out the door with it (taxes, title included) for under $23,000. As far as I'm concerned this is the best 4x4 deal out there.

Solid 4wd and fuel economy
I wanted 4wd, but didn't want to guzzle gas. The 2008 Patriot is a great mix of both. I'm getting about 28 highway and maybe 24-25 around town. The 4wd is solid Jeep. I've been up to Maine a few times and through plenty of snow and dirt roads with no problems. I got the 5-speed manual because I like the control; plus test-driving the CVT was weird - I doubt it's for everyone. The Patriot is not exactly overpowered, no doubt the price one pays for fuel economy, but with the ability to downshift, the pick up is just fine. The ride is very comfortable and quiet. The interior is basic, but the features (standard cruise control, inside 12v jack, MP3 plug, stability control, fold-flat seats, hard rubber cargo well) are practical and of good quality. I like the look of it, too; it's modern, but not too modern. Overall, I highly recommend the Patriot and plan to drive it the distance!

Best Value
I recently bought the 2008 4X4 Patriot with CVT and 2.4 liter engine and find them to be smooth, relatively quiet, fuel efficient and adequately powerful under all road and light off-road conditions. The interior is comfortable and functional (I'm 6 ft. 200 lbs.) - it looks great and stands up to heavy daily use, as does the vehicle. Compared to other vehicles in the market category, I received many more options and features in the Patriot than I would have in the next nearest competitor under consideration. Anyone in the market for an economical SUV that's pleasant to drive should consider the Patriot.
