The Best Mercedes Ever
The last and the greatest Mercedes product, engineering is beyond today's understanding. The most reliable car I have ever owned, with proper maintenance it will run longer than any of today's vehicles. Comfort is incomparable, and acceleration is satisfying (if you get V8 or V12)

it used to be a great car...
I do love the German cars. and when everything is working this car is still magnificence on wheels. It's just been a long time since everything worked. The central pneumatic unit on these older S-Class cars always fails. It costs $1600 plus labor to replace it so the older cars all have this bad part. Without this control using you have no heat, no AC controls, no door locks, no self closers, basically a lot of the car is crippled. I had hoped that MB would be a more reliable brand, but really this car has about the same things fail about the same rate as any old chevy. Pulleys, belts, hoses, water pump, PS pump, oil sender, motor sensors, all failed around 150K miles, just like any old car. You can get an old S-class for a few thousand bucks, but prepare to make higher payments for repairs than you would make for payments on a new one.

Expensive to fix
Car is great when running good. Not always the case. It's very smooth and comfortable. Car has almost 260,000 miles and the engine is powerful. However, parts are expensive and some mechanics are afraid of it.

MB W140 Series "S" Class
Classic looking, comfortable car. but up keep and maintenance costs are high. Get a late (to 1999), low mileage model. You'll be happy. But understand that there are lot of features which reply on on-board computers which have been only recently developed when the car was built. Some of the systems are not very reliable and are expensive to repair. One example is the electically retractable outside rear view mirrors.

1998 S 420
Purchased at a very reasonalble price, sound body, engine and suspension, aftermarket parts available if you look for them. Fun to drive and fuel economy is exceeding expectations. I expect it will be a classic before I sell it.

Mercedes w140 s class great value
The w140 s is a great car and a great value. Available in several trim levels with both a six cylinder and V8 motors. The slab side s class is one of the prettiest and classiest looking s classes according to many including this writer. This is the last of the over engineered sedans with many great options for both comfort and safety. These cars are dependable, quiet, safe, and perform well for their size and weight. Sure acceleration, precise braking, and all the usual interior appopintments one would expect to find in the big Euro sedans.

great luxurious car
i absolutely love this car. i bought it used while it needed to be repaired, and although there was a lot to maintain, it's a greeat car. EXTREMELY spacious. passengers always comment on how much room there is in the back seat. it has great features like memory seats, heated seats, locking glove box, back mirrors w/ lights, back ash trays, everything. its the classiest car iv ever driven nothing can really compare its even real leather. the acceleration is very good especially comparitive to its size! its verrry big but easy to get used to and so easy to dirve. my favorite its that the steering wheel is effortless to turn litterally i can do it with a pinky. the downsides: not very good on gas at all, on average 17 mpg. premium gas only 93 octane!! huuuge gas tank (25 gallons) so it cost alot to fill but it last w hile. overall i would get this car over any other. we have to get rid of mine cause theres too many miles and i just cant even think about getting another car that comes close to the eliteness of this car

I know what I like!
Bought the S500 used with 75,000 miles 6 months ago knowing that it needed a few minor items repaired which have since been completed. The car is a joy and entitled to all the respect and admiration usually attributed to it. You know - going in - that it's an expensive automobile to maintain, but with appropriate maintenance it will amortize itself nicely. Consider that I like the car and that I'm biased but I thoroughly enjoy getting into the car and driving it. It's all there - comfort - reliablity - respect. One final consideration - value - I'm into this car about $20,000.00 - a far cry from the $100,000.00 you're looking at for a new one. My $80,000.00 is out there in the market working for me!!
