I bought this car in 2005 , in it's first generation, from the Demo floor with around 600 miles on it. In 2009 I was in a bad accident where the car spined out after being hit, then hit 2 freeway walls. The air bags deployed but the car was totaled. I will definitely say that this car is safe because after that accident, four of us literally got out of the car and walked away from the accident. Between 2005 and 2009 I put around 45,000-50,000 miles a year on the vehicle and it was still running like new.

This car was reliable, stylish, and comfortable. However, some of the exterior didn't hold up well. The lift gate handle popped off once, the back bumper fell off once, the side panel strip popped off once. Just annoying. The acceleration was not great and neither was the turning radius, but neither of those things bothered me much.

I have really enjoyed owning this vehicle. It's responsive and fun to drive. At 12 years old it is still a head turner. And although it is a small vehicle, it has tons of room on the inside. My 6'2" and 6'4" siblings sat in back and had plenty of head room. We have had to repair it once in the last 135,000 miles. The only drawbacks have been a lot of road noise and a reduced turning radius. (hard to do u-turns)

2005 Scion XB review

In 2005 I needed to buy a new car. I had driven Toyota vans for several years, and was looking to buy another. I was at the car lot looking for my next van, when I found I was having too much trouble helping my husband up on the front passenger side. He had started becoming more and more handicapped, and I was having to move him around in a wheelchair. Disappointed on not being able to buy the van I wanted that day, as I pushed my husband in the wheelchair back towards our vehicle. On the way we passed by a little car called the Scion XB. I saw the large front doors, opened one of them and saw that the seat was at chair height from the pavement. As I looked into the front seat I also found that the car had lots of leg room to fit my 6'2'' husband. I pulled my husband up from the wheelchair and helped him into that Scion. He slid into the seat as if it had been buttered. When I looked at the headroom left over his head I saw a least 3 - 4 inches to spare. His leg room was great too. I left the Toyota dealership that day not in a Toyota van, but in a Scion XB. That was 11 years ago. My dear husband has passed away now, but I still drive that Scion. It has given me years of maintenance free service, and many $$$$ savings in gasoline. I still drive that car, and if I forgot to mention, it has loads of space. I only just last week I lowered the back seat, had the tires pumped up to 33psi, and carried home 36 bags of mulch for my garden. I put 30 in the back, 3 across and 6 high. I made two rows. I then place 6 bags in my passenger seat. I drove away being able to see traffic easily through my rearview mirror, as well as, my two outside side mirrors. I made 4 trips without difficulty and brought home a total of 144 bags of mulch that day. My car still drives like the day I bought it. I keep my car up to date on it's maintenance, and it was only this week for the first time that the car had a mechanical issue. I had to have the air conditioner worked on. 1st problem in 11 years. I would give this car a A+++++! Thank you Scion for building this excellent vehicle.

Brought used with 179k miles. Vehicle runs well, with great gas mileage. Some conditions to consider prior to purchase: 1) one interior light source, 2) no thermo engine gauge, 3) no cruise control, 4) small interior rearview and passenger-side mirrors), and 6) no lighting in glove compartment. Hopefully, future Scion xB models will address the listed concerns.

We bought our used 2005 Scion XB in September of 2010 w/ 48k mile and here it is July 2015 w/109k miles. We almost traded this car in for a Honda Odyssey but decided against it when the dealership only wanted to give us $2k for it so we decided to keep it since its been sooooooo good to us?We have maintained it as scheduled, added new tires and rims, new Bluetooth stereo and new speakers and it sounds great . We had to replace the radiator twice but that was because of rocks hitting the radiator, I am thinking of by a car bra for it. We noticed the Bosch wipers are best for this car and cheaper if you buy them online..We had to replace the window motors but purchased those online too for dirt cheap and if you look on Youtube you can find a lot of stuff on how to do it yourself easily? The only drawback about this car is how flimsy it is, so be careful on the road and try to avoid hitting anything because the front and rear bumpers are very flimsy and the parts break off easily. The other thing about his car it doesn?t have a lot of power when your are taking off but once you?re going , you?re going good, other than that this car is a great car and I am glad we didn?t trade it in?.We take this car all over Texas, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Laredo and South Padre Island and we take our three small pets with us?All we do is put our duffel bags and backpacks on the floor and fold down the rear seats and stick a ice chest in the back and we are good to go and the pets have plenty of room to lay around. I thought about getting a roof rack but I refuse to spend $1000 for a roof rack and cargo basket. So if you?re looking to buy a 2005 Scion XB, I highly recommend it.

My ten year old 2005 Black Cherry Pearl with 100,000+ miles has been reliable. Although I've replaced the battery, changed all 4 tires, had the belts replaced, and responded to the recall, I've gotten my money's worth. At first people don't get what a Scion really is...I call mine the little sister to a Forerunner. I've suggested they fix the roof with deeper grooves where water doesn't pour in when it's raining or simply add a kind of shield. It's a bumpy, noisy ride and probably meant for high school kids but, for the $, it has served me well.

If I had earned a commission every time I recommended this vehicle, I'd be rich by now! I've only had amazing things to say about my 2005 xb when approached by strangers who are curious about my unusual looking car. I've let them see the interior, which seats 5 very comfortably due to the boxy shape. We specifically searched for a roomy car that was still economical, and I never once regretted this purchase. Great mpg, just such a fun car. Bumpy ride true, but I barely notice any more. Do wish it was not so low to the ground, which makes it not a great car for the snow...but all in all, love this car and would buy another xb in a heartbeat ( though why has fuel economy gotten worse in new models????)

The car did get very good MPG despite the box design. 33mpg hwy with a manual. The problems I had were like others have stated. 1. The plastic hatch release broke off (look around and you will notice other XBs driving around with these broken) 2. Two bottom grill pieces fell out. (once again look around and you will see other XBs driving around with these missing) People on XB forums have posted ideas how they drill holes trough them with zip ties attaching them to the car so they don't loose these when they fall out. 3. There is not tensioner pully for tension when changing a belt to apply and take away tension. You basically have to loosen the alternator to take off a belt. To put a belt back on you have to guess how much tension is on because there is no tensioner. 4. Mine leaked inside and would fog up with condensation. 5. It sits very low to the ground and driving down the road in a snow storm I hit a chunk of snow that fell off another vehicle cracking the front valance. 6. It handled very poorly in snow. We had a snow storm and I got stuck in my driveway and could not make it to work. Many times I had great difficulty making it up even slight inclines in the winter.
