We recently purchased a 2013 VW Touareg VR6 Sport Edition. It has navigation, backup camera, the Xenon headlamps and the Volkswagen "Car-go" protection package. We have never owned an SUV just sedans and coupe's so this our first experience with a bigger car. Positives Honestly, it drives like a car. The steering wheel is light and responsive and when you are in it you don't feel totally disconnected from the road by riding really high. The navigation system is great. Easy user interface and a larger screen then some of its competitors. The turn by turn directions actually appear inbetween the spedometer and the odometer so instead of constantly glancing back and forth it is right in front of you. The back up camera is great, especially with the distance control to make sure you aren't going to back into anything. The Xenon headlamps are adjustable so when you turn the wheel, the headlights turn with you so you can see furthur down the turn. The ride is great, a quiet interior and tires that block out a good portion of the road noise. Negatives I am not a fan of the eight speed transmission. When you are accelerating it is always trying to change gears too quickly. the gear ratios are way too low and the throttle is very sensative. Also, when you are slowing down, since the car is trying to downshift through eight gears, it sometimes clunks down through gears to get it back to first, and makes the car almost learch to a stop. Also, the base radio is very lacking in power. It almost seems small for the car, even with the bass turned very high it doesn't do much for you. Also, a minor flaw is the Volkswagen "Car-go" protection means your bumper cover by your rear liftgate is a crome piece of plastic. Now that doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you are backing up towards the sun, the crome reflects right back into the camera and makes it almost useless. Overall I really enjoy this car. The powerliftgate is great for my wife and is very convienent when your hands are full. Also, the rear seats fold almost completely down so it gives ample storage room. The only concerning portion is the transmission. The eight speeds almost seem unecessary especially when coming to a stop and downshifting. I didn't know how to rate the "care free maintence" since, yes it is good they cover the first 30,000 miles, but they are very stingy with when you can change your oil. Per the manuel they will only cover oil changes every 10K. Here's hoping to a great car!

I gave my '13 Touareg Sport a fifth star for value because I purchased it with 20,000m on the odometer, which brought the price down considerably. Only a three star on performance because asking a 4,700 lb. vehicle to 'perform' with 'only' 280hp is asking a bit much. My performance perspective is perhaps skewed by the fact I own a 335is, and a Carrera S. To the gent admonishing the 8speed tranny, I beg your pardon. It shifts smoothly to the point of hardly noticing. There are eight fwd gears FOR A REASON, it is allows for MUCH improved gas mileage, so therefore I am grateful to have it. I have had in my past, a Toyota Land Cruiser, so I have a quality reference point. To that end I can only say I love this SUV. It's understated design is, to my eyes, a thing of beauty. I am quite pleasantly surprised by it's cornering characteristics, given it's onerous, but necessary weight. I am thankful that VW owns Audi and Porsche, as my Touareg shares much of the Q7 and Cayenne's underpinnings, at a fraction of their cost. I could not be happier with my Touareg, and plan on enjoying it for a VERY long time.

I purchased a gently used 2013 Touareg Lux in black. I shopped for an SUV for months - researching all the top models. I've also owned a Jeep Grand in the past, but the reliability was so bad I couldn't go back. I loved the Cayenne but it was out of my price ranged and not practical enough. Also looked at the Acura MDX and BMW X5. The Touareg had the best blend of performance, luxury, and ruggedness. It drives great the beat up Boston roads and it's very comfortable in all seats - the backseat has tons of room even with the front seats pushed back. It feels very solid driving on all roads, especially highway. I love the high driving position, but it still handles great around corners and off ramps with little body roll. Interior is nice and simple - very intuitive interfaces and the nav is nice too. I appreciate that they let you type in addresses while driving, unlike many other cars (VW just warns you once, and then you can enter destinations). I was apprehensive about the higher price for a VW, but considering the quality and styling, I think it's well worth it! Remains to be see how the maintenance costs are, but I got the dealer to cover all maintenance up to 40k, which was a nice bonus.

I am a realtor and so my car is my work life. I have had two Touareg's now and I would consider a third. I am in and out of challenging situations every day including rough terrain and construction sites. If you put Michelin's on this car, the all-wheel drive is incredibly sure-footed. The clearance is high and forgiving and the turning radius at 19.5 feet is incredible. I have maneuvered my way out of many, many tight spots. I had 135,000 miles on my first Touareg and I have 95,000 on my current ride. I've kept up with the maintenance including the drive train, fuel pump and miscellaneous bulbs. But nothing that I would call unreasonable.

Driver's side window would operate on it's own or get stuck in the up or down position. It took 4 trips to the dealership to fix it. Final trip they replaced the wiring harness. Rough shifting in traffic as 8 speed transmission gets confused. At 42k miles engine vibration at 1,200 RPMs. VW says it's an inherent problem and there is no fix. What does that mean? I guess it means they are aware of it but don't know what causes it so deal with it.

I have 8k miles on it. It handles very well considering its weight (almost 5k lbs). Diesel acceleration is very good with a rewarding growl from the engine. It drives very well at high speed. You feel all the bumps on the road, but I like it better than a cushy ride Benz ML has. A noise started around 7k miles, my dealer detected the problem and right wheel bearing had to be replaced. I would have given it 5 stars otherwise. No problem after the fix.

I bought my 2004 Touareg in August of 2003. Initially, it had quite a few problems the first year, which I attribute to it being the first model year. However, after we ironed out all the problems, electrical and with the stereo system, we have had very few problems with our Touareg. It is 12 years old this August and has 170,000 miles on it. We are now considering buying another Touareg and are starting to shop around. I bought my V8 new but this time will be looking for a low mileage certified pre owned and am wondering if the V6 diesel will feel as powerful as the V8? We really wanted to see if we could drive it to the end of its life and we still may, it is in great condition, but now needs to have the exhaust patched, and a new thermostat. The maintenance on the touareg is very pricey however, I love how safe I feel in the car and think it is one of the prettiest SUV's on the road.
