The Chrysler Sebring JXi convertible has two things going for it--it's the best-looking convertible on the market, which is little wonder because Chrysler is the styling champ, and based on roominess, comfort and performance, it's the best convertible.

The car carries the Sebring name, same as the little sport coupe built for Chrysler by Mitsubishi in Downstate Normal, but it is based on the larger Chrysler Cirrus sedan platform.

The Cirrus heritage is the reason adults have ample head, leg and arm room upfront and can fit in back without a shoehorn.

The top motors up or down at the touch of a button, is rather solid with little wind noise and features a glass rear window with a defroster so you don't have to store the car in the winter.

Very comfortable ride and handling and very enjoyable top-down driving. Despite snow during the test time, this brain-addled scribe chose to lower the cloth top to ensure it functioned properly. Simply lower the top, twist the heater knob to full blast and the car is as enjoyable in a Chicago winter as it is in the spring, summer or fall--only lots more people look at you, most quizzically.

The JXi comes with dual air bags; power brakes with ABS; modified double wishbone touring suspension; power steering; stainless-steel exhaust; remote decklid release; 16-inch all-season tires with cast-aluminum wheels; fog lamps; dual power heated mirrors; tinted glass; body-colored moldings; intermittent wipers; air conditioning; AM/FM stereo with cassette, CD changer controls, and power antenna; compass; power windows; power locks, which engage after you place the lever in "drive" and take off; tilt steering; speed control; illuminated vanity mirrors; front and rear floor mats; dual cupholders (or choice of one cupholder, one ashtray); and leather-wrapped wheel.

Base price is $24,660, to which you add $535 for freight and $800 for the optional 2.5-liter, 168 h.p., 24-valve, V-6 that's teamed with 4-speed automatic and is livelier and quieter than the standard 2.4-liter, 150-h.p., 16-valve, V-6.
