So much attention has been devoted to the redesign of the subcompact Escortat Ford and Saturn at General Motors that the Nissan Sentra has been invisible.

We drove the 1996 GXE and probably the most impressive feature is the line at the bottom of the window sticker that reads: "Total--$15,863" with air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with cassette, power locks and windows, cruise control, split fold down rear seats, power steering and dual air bags as standard. A very complete package, except for a hefty $999 for ABS.

The 1.6-liter, 16-valve 4-cylinder may be a bit short on power, but it's long on mileage--30 m.p.g. city/40 highway with standard 5-speed.
