Lots of HP For The $$ -- But That's About It
October 8, 2018
Took a chance on the ST after Ford offered $4500 in rebates last year and picked up a base model for $21,000 delivered. I figured I couldn't go wrong at that price, as resale values seemed pretty good for this trim level Focus (as it turned out, I sold it for $19,900 a year later--but with only 500 miles on it!). Here's my take overall: It's a great "kids' car"--fun to drive, probably fairly safe, room enough to stuff 3 others in it, practical, yet sporty, and still an economy car to the extent that if you're not stepping on it all the time you actually can eek out 30mpg on the highway. HOWEVER, the other side of all that is: It rides HORRIBLY--extremely stiff and bumpy, close-to-the-ground (you feel every defect in the road), shifter is clunky (especially finding "3" and ending up in "5"), cheap interior on the base model, cheap radio and sound system, poor exterior design that throws a lot of debris back on the rear window in wet or sloppy conditions, cheap paint (easy to get chips and nicks on the front end). For $20,000 or so, probably one of the better deals for a brand new performance vehicle--but don't expect much besides a fast 0-60.
