I guess I must have liked it because I drove it for 18 years. In all that time there was only one major repair which was less than $500.00 so
definitely can't complain about that. I don't think they make the Safari van anymore.
Great place to shop and buy a car. Michael Roaden was amazing from start to finish. He help us select the right car and the financing process was amazing! I would highly recommend you check this place out before your next purchase.
I've always loved the Safari/Astros

this is the 3rd one in our family. highest towing capacity of any mini van. loved the reliability. although, this is the first van that i had a lot of small issues with ac compressor/steering pump/idler/shocks that were taken care in the extended warranty. solid vehicle with lots of room to carry things and the roof rack is very useful.
I recently purchased a car for my daughter. Roseville Auto Sales has great cars at a reasonable price for first time car buyers. And the staff is very patient and friendly. Check them out!!
I know all the ins and outs of this vehicle.
by 95 Gmc Safari Owner from
July 17, 2014
I have owned a 95 GMC Safari for about a year now and plan to drive it for many more years. This may seem biased but I will tell you why these can be great vans to own.
Is it safe?
According to the government no, they give it a bad safety rating. If you ask me they are, these vans sit up at a good height. The previous owner of my van was rear ended at around 60 m.p.h by a car. The other car was totaled but as for the van the only damage was the bumper. Since the production of these vans stopped in 2005 it won't be up to date on the latest safety standards but I think safety wise you won't have to worry to much as long as you don't crash at to high rate of a speed.
What about repairs and maintenance?
Some cars need to have repairs and maintenance all the time, but not these vans. These vans engines and transmission are built strong and meant to last a long time with little maintenance. Most maintenance will be basic things like spark plugs and oil changes if you are doing the bare minimum. Other things you can get a few years before doing. Since this is a van repairs may be a little more expensive to do. Some repairs I do myself to save money. One major repair than can be common is replacing fuel injectors. This is a expensive repair, I was quoted around $1500-$1800. Other than fuel injectors there isn't major repairs as long as you car is decent to good running and you maintain it decently. Small repairs when the van becomes 19 years old may include replacing exterior door handles and replacing tie rods.
What about the interior?
It depends on what year you get and what package it is. The older vans 85 - 95 are more basic. Not to many features and not a fancy dash and interior. If you are into basic then the older vans are good. If you want a little more modern and more features then I recommend the years 1999-2000.
What about the exterior?
These vans from 85-94 are a little short. 95 -2005 are good in my opinion because they are a little bit longer. Some models offer for the back barn doors and some offer hatch doors. I recommend barn doors.
How are these vans when driving?
When they get old they may take a little longer to speed up than other cars but they can easily handle driving at high speeds. I drive mine on the interstate no problem. When the car does get old you may need to look at new shocks and tie rods. At high speeds with bad shocks this van is a little bumpy. At high speeds with bad tie rods it is a little hard to keep the van straight. Also bad tie rods the steering isn't tight so you have to take turns slow unless you want to make a wide turn. But with good shocks, good tie rods, decent driving condition then you shouldn't worry.
Is 95 a good year to buy?
I say yes depending on your needs. 95 is basic in features if you are looking for a basic car. It is build like GMC built trucks in that year. It is similar in height and mine has a v6 4.3L. Just test drive before buying to make sure it is in decent condition.
What about resale value?
As for resale value the value isn't great. Ones in rough but good driving can go for around $500. Ones in decent can go for $800 to $1,000. Ones in great condition can go for around $1,400
Are these great work or family vans?
Both the cargo and passenger vans can make great work vans. If you use a passenger van as a work van it is best to get an older one because it has less features and the seats are easily removed. Plus the passenger vans seems to be longer and higher in height. As for family they are good to. Just try finding one in decent condition if you have a family.
With all this being said test drive it before you buy and inspect closely. Also I can't guarantee my review because you are buying used and every used car has its issues I can't account for. This is just a broad review.
The last vehicle I purchased was from Uebhlors’s in Jasper, IN. Financing was easy and the salesman helped me find the exact truck I wanted. Their service department is quick and reliable, gets me in and out with no problems!!
Fantastic RWD mid size van with lots of people/cargo space and towing power. GMC should have never discontinued this vehicle. Only a $$$$$ 1/2 ton truck with crew cab comes close to replacing what this mighty van can do for you. Google it if you do not believe me. It is great for a long vacation or to take your group of friends out to dinner or concert, or to tow your boat or camper. I had 5 Astro/Safari over the last 25 years and they never let me down. One of them I drove it past 350k miles without any major troubles.
Did not buy the car decided to stay with what I have. Do believe if I ever look again I will be looking here. Very nice and professional people
Nice size van for growing family, dependable.

I have owned this van for 8 years, I've only spent about $200 in maintenance costs. The van is capable to haul 8 passengers in comfort. Visibility is surprisingly good, with very little in the way of blind spots like some vans. The stout little Vortec V6 has plenty of power even when fully loaded, and can achieve 20 MPG highway. Rear entry is easily accessed through the lift glass hatch and/or lower "barn" doors.
My car blew a rod approximately a week ago, so I needed a new car ASAP. I spent 5-6 hours perusing various car lots to no avail. I was exhausted, to say the least. Finally decided to drive to Deep Park because of their tremendous selection of cars. Met Marcus and I could tell right away that he wasn't interested in selling me something that I just "kindof" liked-to make a deal and a quick buck. He was very patient, letting me test drive a couple of cars, even one car numerous times. I decided on a Mazda, purchased it and drove home. When I got home, I quickly realized that I made the wrong decision, and I wanted another car I was looking at on the lot- a Volkswagen Eos. Marcus and his team allowed me to return the Mazda and trade it for the Volkswagen- no problem!!! If you are looking for a dealership that's only goal is to make the customer truly happy, you found it!
Per-owned 2013 Silverado I got BEST deal on it. I come from Houghton Lake to look at what they hade here to find the one I been looking for. Jp was there to help me out.
Wish GMC would make this model again!

This is the 3rd Safari I have owned. I need a van bigger than today's current mini vans, but not as big as a full size van. The new "city" model vans still do not have the width in cargo space, nor length. The truck frame is solid, and the engine strong. So many of new vehicles today have a seat design that is pretty much in the shape of the letter "C" giving no lumbar support and forcing the neck forward in an unnatural position. Uncomfortable to say the least! This GMC has a solid drivers seat with lumbar support adjustment even in the basic models. Why have ai bought 3? My second one was rear-ended while I was stopped, and the driver of the other car hit me at 60 miles an hour. I'm still here to talk about it, and so is my dog! Thank you GMC! Make them again!!!
I called on a Thursday and spoke to Jay. He was very friendly and upfront! As many car salesmans appear to be pushy on the phone to make a sale,Jay was not! I ABSOLUTELY enjoyed talking to him. He had a great deal of knowledge on the vehicle and by the end of the night I had made the decision to drive down 5.5 hrs to go pick up my vehicle. I was greeted by the owner and signed papers with Greg. What a group of wonderful men. Very professional, dealership clean and my vehicle was all ready to go! Not only did the ride home go smooth, Greg actually followed up with a phone call to ensure I made it home safe and had no problems. Unlike an experience I have had in the past with another NJ dealership...High Quality Imports was truly worth the drive and I will definitely come back and recommend this dealership to friends! Thanks guys Western NY Loves YOU!!!!!
Never Want Any Other Vehicle

Unfortunately, it can't last forever. Now that the GMC Safari is no longer I'll have to find something else. This is the best vehicle that I've ever had. My parents had a GMC Safari years before I purchased mine. I drove it once and wanted one of my own. It took a while but it happened in 2005. Since I got this van it has been to the east coast, as far south as the South Banks of NC, north to Toledo, Ontario...cross country to the west, Whidbey Island, the San Juan Islands, Oregon...cross country back to Pennsylvania. I could get behind the wheel on any day and know that I was going to get where I was going. It has been more than reliable. 14 years old and I would rather get this van repaired than buy something else. Sadly, I will have to. Guess I will have to change to the Savanna...it better live up to the Safari.
Frank and Gina are the best at their trade! They are personable, caring, and strive for the best possible experience for their customers! They picked me up at that airport and ensured the car was in tip top shape. I just enjoyed looking at all the other models in their inventory as there were many great deals on their lot! All of the paperwork sailed through in Indiana. Thank you both! I hope to purchase my next vehicle from them!
This was a great experience working with the purchase of my Durango. I was looking for weeks at the Big dealerships they would not deal on trying to make a sale. This dealership was friendly and made you feel welcome
Basic transportation --- Big box car

What can I say ... bought it in 2001 and it's still running strong at 158,000 miles with nothing more done than oil changes, brakes, and tires.
The only aggravating thing has been its door locks which were repaired twice under warranty and once since yet still have broken a fourth time. The locks still work but the full car won't lock up from the passenger side (latest problem since the previous breaks were all different).
As I say - basic transportation - but extraordinarily reliable basic transportation.
This is the best vehicle I've ever owned! 80,000 miles with no repairs until the heater core had to be replaced. I'd buy a new one if GMC would make them. The "Savana" is too big.
The current resale value of these vans should encourage GMC to make them again!
Easy car buying experience. They made the process easy from start to finish.
Great Van for the Family

This van has been really reliable. Ours is a SLE model we bought new. Have done the routine receommend maintenance and only had to replace things that have worn out, radiator, brake master cylinder, battery, hatch struts. The enegine heeded to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced at 190K miles. Been using 100% synthetic oil since 100K miles. Now has 198K miles. Fuel economy has been consistant at 16-17 city and 18-19 hwy, not the greatest, but considering the other large vehicles that would replace it, we have been no worse for the wear. The seats are comfortable. It holds up to eight persons. Drives nice on long trips. We ahve gone across the country in it two times, with our family of five and related luggage. There are interior power outlets in front and rear.
