it used to be a great car...

I do love the German cars. and when everything is working this car is still magnificence on wheels. It's just been a long time since everything worked. The central pneumatic unit on these older S-Class cars always fails. It costs $1600 plus labor to replace it so the older cars all have this bad part. Without this control using you have no heat, no AC controls, no door locks, no self closers, basically a lot of the car is crippled.
I had hoped that MB would be a more reliable brand, but really this car has about the same things fail about the same rate as any old chevy. Pulleys, belts, hoses, water pump, PS pump, oil sender, motor sensors, all failed around 150K miles, just like any old car.
You can get an old S-class for a few thousand bucks, but prepare to make higher payments for repairs than you would make for payments on a new one.
