Not fancy but a hard worker and cheap too
May 31, 2007
Bought my SW2 from a Saturn dealer in 1999 with 62,000 miles. Just gave it up in 2007 at 193,000 miles. Extremely economical and reliable. Parts replaced in 8 years: muffler, horn, ignition coil, brake rotors, rear swaybar links. That's all! Average 32 MPG on country roads (5 speed), hit 40 MPG once on a long highway run.
Adequate power, but you could tell by the response when you had a passenger. Towed a 950 pound boat reasonably well.
If they were still made I would have very seriously considered buying a new one.
What I liked:
- cost of ownership
What I didn't like:
- noisy, rattly (especially toward the end)
- instrument cluster visibility (steering wheel blocked part of speedometer)
- oil filter nearly inaccessible
