<v Announcer>Cars.com Auto Review. Hi, I'm Dave Thomas with Cars.com. And this is the redesigned 2010 Lexus GX SUV. Now let's just get the elephant in the room out of the way right away.
This is the SUV that consumer reports said do not buy because it had a little issue with tipping over Now, Lexus actually did stop selling them. Fixed the problem with the stability control, it is on sale. And last month sales were up over a 100% Now why did that consumer report story take off so quickly? That's because the GX is shorter, narrower and taller than its direct competition, like the Acura MDX. It's also 700 pounds heavier than the MDX. What all that means is when you take a sharp turn at high speeds, it will exhibit more body lean than the competitors. Despite the body lean issue, the GX is still safe to drive, but is it fun to drive? Not really. V8 engine pumping out around 300 horsepower is pretty anemic, especially carrying around all this weight. Obviously you can't take curves very quickly. And even the highway ride is kind of uncomfortable. Unpleasant. If you do want something that's a better highway companion, little smoother around suburban roads. You want to stick to something like that Acura MDX, that Lincoln MKT, or even the Buick Enclave. I wish you could say the driving experience was the only negative with the GX, but that wouldn't be true. Starting upfront the live traffic and the navigation system isn't very accurate. I discovered that in a very long commute home the other night. Then you have these redundant audio controls, which you access through this sliding panel. What's wrong with that? Well, hey, they're redundant, you don't need them at all. That also blocks the cubby I use all the time for your iPod and USB. Now there's also this great glove box, which is almost completely filled by the owner's manual. Second row dimensions are also smaller than almost all the competition, but luckily the seats adjust. And when you slide them all the way back, you have plenty of room and you're quite comfortable. Now it also means the third row seats are pretty much useless. And then there's the cargo area. So we've come out to the suburbs where a side opening gate like this won't really be a problem, but if you're in the city and tricky parking situations definitely will get in the way. Now, what is a problem, anywhere you go is this high cargo floor. It actually has a lower shelf here, which gets kind of juts out, hits you right in the thigh. And the cargo itself is almost waist high. That's really high for an SUV. Now that might not be a problem when you're loading light stuff like paper towels, but it'll definitely be cumbersome when it gets on the way when you're loading heavier gear like golf clubs or (indistinct). The final insult to all this injury is the price tag on the GX. It starts at $51,000. The model we have here starts at 56 equipped as is all up to 64, $65,000. So it's a lot more money than that Acura MDX or the Lincoln MKT, which we actually like driving a lot more. And it's actually similarly priced to the Infiniti QX 56, which was also just redesigned, which is a bigger vehicle. We actually liked driving it and you can get it at a similar price. <v Announcer>For more car related news, go to Cars.com, or our blog Kickingtires.net.
