(upbeat rock music) The big SUV wars in the United States are about to get a little bit hotter. We've already seen new versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Suburban and the GMC Yukon.
Jeep's now at the party with its new Wagoneer, and Ford has now responded with this. This is the new 2022 Ford Expedition. And the big news for '22 is that there are two new versions of it, the Stealth Performance Package and the Timberline. There's also a new powertrain. There's a new interior. There's some new technology. Ford's really done quite a bit to try and keep the new Expedition competitive. So let's go have a look at the new '22 Expedition and see just what Ford's changed. Styling changes for the new '22 Expedition really aren't that great. It's got some slight updates like new grills, new headlights, but the bigger news is the fact that there are two new trim levels. First one is this. This is the Timberline version, and it's billed as the most capable off-road version of the Expedition that they've ever created. Style wise, you can identify it through a lot of these burnt umber, red orange accents, all around the vehicle. You've got 18 inch wheels with 33 inch off-road tires, and you've got different bumpers front and rear for better approach and departure angles. And also, it sits a little bit higher. You've got 10.6 inches of ground clearance, which is the most you've ever found on an Expedition. Now, if rock crawling is not really your thing and mall crawling might be more your speed, Ford this offering this. This is the 2022 Ford Expedition Stealth Performance Package. It builds off of the Limited trim and adds things like black grill, black mirrors, black running boards, even 22 inch black wheels. But the more important stuff is actually under the hood for the Stealth Performance Package. Powering the updated Expedition will be a choice of three engines. All of them variations of the EcoBoost twin turbocharged three and a half liter V6. The XL, XLT, and STX trims get the standard EcoBoost engine, making 380 horsepower and 470 pounds feet of torque. But the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum get one that makes 400 horsepower and 480 pounds feet of torque. Now, if you opt for the Timberline or the Limited Stealth Performance Package, you're going to get the new engine that makes 440 horsepower and an eye-popping 510 pounds feet of torque. All engines are mated to a standard 10 speed automatic transmission. Rear wheel drive is standard and four wheel drive is optional on all models. The new Timberline and Stealth Performance Package models get some different equipment, however. Timberline becomes the most capable off-road version of the Expedition thanks to standard four wheel drive with a two speed transfer case, a mechanical limited slip differential, seven different selectable electronic drive modes. The steel skid plate from a '22 Ford Raptor pickup and dedicated off-road steering with unique stabilizer bars and springs. It wears different front and rear bumpers and rides on taller all terrain tires, allowing for improved approach and departure angles, and a higher ground clearance of 10.6 inches. Its improved electronics and vehicle architecture allow for the addition of the Trail Turn Assist feature, first seen on the new Ford Bronco. For the on-road enthusiast, the Stealth Performance Package brings a firmer sport suspension combined with Ford's continuously controlled electronic shock damping with road preview forward-facing cameras. That allows adjustment of the vehicle suspension in anticipation of changing road conditions or surfaces. The Expedition could drag up to 9,300 pounds when the proper trim is equipped with a heavy duty trailer tow package. The Timberline only gets 9,200 pounds. Updates to the truck's electronics have also let Ford fit the updated 2.0 version of the novel Pro Trailer Backup Assist to the Expedition, which helps to reverse a trailer when the kit is all properly installed. Frankly, I didn't think all that much was wrong with the old Expedition's interior. Yeah, it had some plasticky bits, but it was still decently high quality. But this new one is a definite improvement. The material quality is better, and look at the Cyprus green interior. It's so fantastic to see actual colors in interiors, instead of just black and gray and beige. Things like the Ford blue and the Cypress green really do make this interior something special. And I think they've done a really great job upgrading the interior of the new Expedition. Pricing for the new '22 Expedition hasn't yet been announced. That's coming closer to its on sale date. And that on sale date is the first few months of next year. If you'd like to learn more about the new '22 Ford Expedition, you can look everything up on cars.com. (upbeat rock music)
