About the video

Cars.com’s Senior Research Editor Damon Bell recently got an up-close look at the completely redesigned 2024 Lexus GX at its reveal event in Austin, Texas, replacing the aged current-generation GX.

Transcript

The current generation Lexus GX mid-size SUV is one of the oldest designs currently on sale in the new car marketplace. It's a vehicle that is in dire need of a redesign, and that's exactly what it's getting early next year.
This is the all new 2024 Lexus GX. Let's take a closer look. The new GX is based on the platform shared with its larger sibling, the LX 600, which was redesigned for 2022. It's a little bit wider than the previous generation model. The front overhang has decreased a little bit for better clearance when off-roading, and the overall look is much more rugged and off-road focused than its predecessor. The base of the windshield pillars has been pushed back for a more upright windshield. That's a another off-road look and feel, and the belt line is lower than before. All in all, it's a very off-road focused look, a more cohesive design than its predecessor. A key addition to the 2024 GX is an all-new off-road focused overtrail trim. Got a roof rack on the overtrail model and the overtrail gets these 33-inch all terrain tires on 18-inch wheels for optimized off-road performance. Other GXs get 20 or 22 inch wheels. The overtrail also gets these black accented overfenders, an electronic locking rear differential for added traction in off-road situations, and an aluminum skid plate to protect underbody components. Out back, we've got the signature full width Lexus taillight with the Lexus script and one key feature that I think will make a lot of people happy, in place of the sometimes cumbersome side hinge gate of the previous GX, here we've got a traditional lift gate. Moving inside, we've got some new Lexus technologies that have also shown up on the new RX and NX. We've got a 12.3 inch digital gauge cluster, a 14 inch Lexus interface multimedia touch screen. We've got physical drive mode selectors here, some four wheel controls there, nice deep cup holders here, and the overall look is really impressive. The dash layout is very straightforward. It does a very nice job of having a rugged off-roader look but with Lexus quality interior trimmings. Another neat available feature is the cool box refrigerated center console. Now I'm six foot six, so I'm a tiny bit cramped here, but most adults are gonna have more than enough space. We've got a really tall roof line here, and there's adequate headroom even under the sunroof housing and decent leg room for average size adults as well. Now when it first goes on sale, the GX will be available only in GX 550 form, powered by a twin Turbocharged 3.4 liter V6 with 349 horsepower. Lexus says that a hybrid version of the GX will be available at a later date and that's a good thing, because the GX 550 is estimated to get only 17 miles per gallon in combined city/highway driving. Now, the 2024 GX isn't slated to go on sale until early next year, so we don't have full pricing information yet, but for more details you can check out our up close article right here on cars.com.
