After a complete overhaul in 2010, the Chevrolet Equinox only offers a couple of changes for 2012. The rear entertainment system is no longer available, but a collision alert and lane departure warning system is now available.

Despite the departure of the rear entertainment system, which is great for providing moments of adult solace in the car, the 2012 Equinox represents a good value in the small crossover market with its quiet ride, smooth handling and stylish looks.

My test car, a top-of-the-line LTZ, came with the upgraded V-6 engine, which is available on all but the entry-level trim. The standard engine is an inline-four-cylinder. Both engines come matched to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive is available.

While the Equinox offers a smooth ride, I wouldn’t call it exciting or agile. Out of the gate — or the driveway, as it were — and on hills, the Equinox accelerated with sufficient gusto, but the overall driving experience was humdrum. Of course, humdrum is perfectly fine for tooling around town with the kids in tow, and it certainly keeps you safe since your lead foot isn’t constantly itching to get the better of you.

The 2012 Chevrolet Equinox has a starting MSRP of $23,450. The LTZ trim with front-wheel drive that I tested starts at $29,380. The addition of the V-6 engine, a navigation system, 18-inch chrome wheels and a collision alert/lane departure warning system pushed my test car’s price to $33,540.

EXTERIOR
The 2012 Chevrolet Equinox has the look of a crossover that is more expensive than it actually is. The LTZ trim that I tested comes with chrome door handles, heated chrome side mirrors and chrome roof rails. It all looked quite luxurious. Once you see the Chevy logo, you’re actually a little surprised. I was more than happy to drop off my kids at school in this car and just as pleased to park it in front of my favorite fancy shoe shop.

My oldest, who’s 5 years old and on the small side, wasn’t able to open the five-seat crossover’s doors, so that was left to me. However, once the doors were open, all three of my children — the smallest one being a petite 1-year-old — could climb in on their own. The power liftgate was a pleasant surprise in its smooth, quiet operation.

Rear cargo space is adequate, but there’s less rear cargo space in the Equinox than in some of its competitors. There is 31.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 63.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, which is lower than the 2011 Honda CR-V’s 35.7 and 72.9 cubic feet, respectively.

My test car had the optional 264-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine and front-wheel drive that got an EPA-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway. The all-wheel-drive version with the same engine gets one mile less per gallon both in the city and on the highway. To maximize miles, consider the standard 182-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that gets 22/32 mpg. The Equinox uses regular gasoline.

INTERIOR
Much like its exterior, the 2012 Equinox’s interior belies a higher price. The silver- and black-colored plastic surfaces look good, and the 7-inch navigation screen displays information clearly. There’s a black plastic visor over the navigation screen to prevent glare, which isn’t aesthetically pleasing but is functional. The center stack is easy to use with simple, well-thought-out buttons and knobs.

In addition to good looks, the Equinox’s cabin is also spacious. The 60/40-split rear seats slide back and forth up to 8 inches and recline to make sitting in them comfortable for even the largest passengers.

Oddly, I found the storage compartments surprisingly narrow. The center console is deep enough to hold a laptop snugly, but it can’t hold a purse or anything bulkier in width than a couple of inches.

I tested the top-of-the-line LTZ trim that comes standard with a power liftgate, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors and driver’s seat memory settings. Bluetooth connectivity, sliding and reclining rear seats, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and an MP3 jack are standard on even the lowest trim level, and most of the higher trim level features are available as options. The navigation system and forward collision and lane departure warning systems that my test car was equipped with are available as options on all trims.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT COUNT

SAFETY
The 2012 Chevy Equinox has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To earn this safety nod, a car must receive the top score of Good in front, side, rear and roof-strength crash tests. It also received four out of five stars overall in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s crash tests.

But that’s only one of its two major safety coups. The other is the Equinox has easily accessible lower Latch anchors. They’re nothing fancy, but they peek out perfectly from the rear seat cushions and require no digging or grunting to employ.

Alas, the Equinox is not roomy enough for a family with three small children in large child-safety seats. This crossover can snugly fit two convertible seats and a backless booster, but not the two convertibles and rear-facing infant-safety seat that my family requires.

The 2012 Chevy Equinox has standard front-wheel drive, all-disc antilock brakes with brake assist, an electronic stability system with anti-roll control, traction control and six airbags, including side curtains for both rows. OnStar is also standard for the first six months of ownership. My test car, which was the highest trim level, also had standard blind spot mirrors, backup camera and parking sensors. A backup camera is standard on all but the entry-level trim.

My test car was equipped with the optional forward collision alert and lane departure warning system. This system has a prominent display of lights at eye level on the dash that show a green car if you’re doing well, a red icon of two cars crashing if you get too close to another car and an orange icon if you drift out of your lane without the turn signal activated. I found this system to be almost counterproductive because it grabbed too much of my attention while driving. All-wheel drive is also available.

  • The 2012 Chevy Equinox has been nothing but a frustrating

    The 2012 Chevy Equinox has been nothing but a frustrating money pit for me. I’ve spent an outrageous amount of money on replacement parts, from constant engine issues to transmission problems, and it feels like something new breaks down every other month. Whether it’s the faulty timing chain, excessive oil consumption, or malfunctioning sensors, I’ve poured way more into repairs than the car is even worth at this point. Instead of being a reliable vehicle, it’s been a source of constant headaches and expenses. I regret ever buying it, and it's become the definition of a financial burden.

  • My dad is a 72 year old man who bought this car from

    My dad is a 72 year old man who bought this car from stars cars/green light in Ohio . His engine blew and has wynns warranty. Palecheck auto who keep his car for two months . My dad and I are looking into this further everything keeps breaking and the car won’t run barely now

  • Oil guzzler, lasted 250k miles

    Bought this vehicle as my first car, used, about 2 years ago, and one of the very first experiences with it was it shutting down as I tried to leave a gas station, and found the thing to have no oil. I believe to have bought it at around 100,000 miles on it. This thing was a oil guzzler through and through, and oil changes and checking my oil was almost religious in how often I was on it, often trying to set up the next oil change appointment so that I was the least amount of miles over. Having it shut off whilst trying to take off or slow down was a very often experience, to the point that I ussually had one to two quarts of oil in the back in preparation. Don’t get me wrong though, even though Oil changes were incredibly often and checking oil was a near often 3 times a week basis, this was the only problem I had with my car. I did not have any other major problems with this vehicle, nothing transmission or otherwise. I was able to take this vehicle across multiple states, including one or two trips almost getting up to 20 hours of driving in one direction. Another warning though, do try to avoid any mountains, as the vehicle was only a few mph faster then the semi trucks going up, no breaking whilst going back down the steep slopes was more of a fear for my life type deal. Eventually, the vehicle served its purpose, missing an oil change by 2,000 miles due to life circumstances, and the oil pan thing cracking severly by the timing belt, at 252,478 miles (approximate). I would not recommend this car, due to awful oil consumption, and if you do think about getting this, know that you must be on top of maintenance for this vehicle as it is not forgiving on forgetfulness.

  • Don't Buy It

    This vehicle stopped me on traffic light. Drivers suspected I was in distress before it restarted. 170km and doing oil change bi weekly. Now Catalyst Convert is gone. The Engine is dysfunctional consumed more fuel and oil.

  • Power steering nearly caused accident

    We bought a used Equinox 2 years ago with less than 40k miles on it. The car has given us trouble since the first week we had it. We have had two instances driving that the power steering failed. We had to stop, pull over and restart the car which fixed the problem the first time. The second time it took 2-3 restarts before the power steering worked again. This could have been life threatening, luckily the roads weren’t busy at the time. We took the car to a Chevy dealership and they could find nothing wrong. We took it to private mechanics and they found the same….:nothing. Now when you start the car occasionally (once a month or so) the car starts and shows the power steering failure message. Have to sit and wait about 30 minutes and try again which does work sometimes. But, now you’re a little late for work or you have to wake up super early, just to make sure the car will work and then you are super early to work or let it sit in the driveway running. I was a Chevy only kind of person at first. Chevy had all my business. After going 0-2 with the last two chevys I will stick to a brand that has at least some kind of reliability. I’m assuming the year of the Chevy is just xxxxty. Because my other was also a 2012, but I’m not risking my money, time or the safety of my family to “give Chevy a chance.” My wife won’t even sit in the car anymore and I can’t blame her. My 3 year old was in the car one of the times the power steering stopped and I can’t imagine how that felt to my wife. I want to stick to the American Makes of car. Problem is my Honda Pilot has 155k miles and never has given me a problem. Hard to rationalize getting a Chevy again to myself. Maybe Ford would do a better job…….

  • 201,000 miles

    I bought my 2012 Equinox used, with 30,000 miles. I was able to get 201,000 before trading. Lots of little mechanical issues and replacing parts after 150,000. AC stopped blowing out of vents... that is a $900 fix. But engine overall was good and she never needed a transmission!

  • Chevy equinox is a very good vehicle.God bless ble

    The car runs great.The car is in good condition.the previous owner did the maintenance regularly.the tires are brand new.the interior is excellent.i have the old receipts for work done on the car.i know the previous owner my mom. the car has a new built in security key for the security system also a spare door key this car is an excellent bargain.i am confident in all weather with all the safety features.i will pay for a new windshield for the new owner comes with spare and jack. I would feel comfortable selling it to someone with children like I said very safe car.thankyou Steve Lyman.

    DONT BUY THIS VEHICLE. Bought it used, 93000. Ate oil, got most enine repaired. Ran good til 120000. Now catalytic converter. Never buying a chevy again.

  • Lots of Miles

    My 2012 Equinox has 156,000 miles on it and I've never had any engine problems. I plan on driving it until it dies, which I hope won't be any time soon. And I might get another one when it comes time to replace it. I love it.

  • Great car fix the a/c vents.

    Okay the car burns oil and you have to put in the Dexos high priced oil,but to me that is a minor annoyance.It runs great and gets good gas mileage. Is comfortable to drive too. The BIG problem that I have not seen mentioned is that the A/C ducts are horrible! The drivers is blocked by the steering wheel and most have very limited adjustment, In sunny Florida this is a major drawback.

  • Another Equinox engine bites the dust.

    My wife drove her 2012 Equinox for just over 100,000 pampered miles. She faithfully changed the oil using high-cost synthetic oil to ensure the longevity of the engine. When the check engine light came on last week, she quickly took it to a mechanic who told her it's burning oil and needs a new engine. What a disappointment. We bought a Chevy wanting to get a US manufactured car and got such a poor lifetime from the Equinox.

  • One issue

    My 2012 equinox had an oil consumption issue which the dealer opted to fix for no cost. I feel it is the cause of me needing a new engine now at 127,000 miles.
