Expert 2000 Chevrolet Metro review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Metro is the smallest car sold by General Motors in the United States and, with a base price of $9,185, the least expensive. It is similar to the Suzuki Swift and is built in Canada at a plant jointly owned by GM and Suzuki. GM holds a stake in Suzuki, and the companies also share the Chevrolet Tracker/Suzuki Vitara sport utility vehicle. Though the Metro is built from the same design as the Swift, it has significant differences. Swift comes only as a hatchback, and Metro comes as a hatchback and sedan. Swift uses a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, and Metro has the same engine plus a 1.0-liter three-cylinder.

Interior
Both body styles seat four, and despite a 15-inch longer body, the sedan’s interior dimensions are similar to the hatchback’s. A folding rear seat is standard on both. Underscoring the Metro’s mission as low-cost transportation, power steering, power locks and a remote trunk release are available only on the LSi sedan. Power windows aren’t offered.

Exterior
The sedan is 164 inches long, 15 more than the hatchback, but both ride a 93-inch wheelbase. The base hatchback comes with charcoal-colored bumpers, and the LSi hatchback and sedan come with body-color bumpers. All models ride on 13-inch wheels and tires.

Under the Hood
The base hatchback’s 55-horsepower 1.0-liter three-cylinder teams with a five-speed manual transmission to return the highest mileage of any gas-powered engine. The EPA estimates are 36 city / 42 highway. The LSi hatchback and sedan use a 79-horsepower 1.3-liter that is available with manual or automatic transmission horsepower.

Performance
Metro offers low prices and high fuel economy, but be prepared for major sacrifices in room, comfort and refinement. The small size and light weight make for a noisy, bouncy ride, and SUVs look like 18-wheelers by comparison.

  • My favorite car.

I got an off lease Metro. 3cyl, 5 speed. Just a basic car. I fell in love with this stupid little car. I drove it like I stole it every day for 10 years. Not one problem ever. It was really fun to drive. People made fun of it. I got 50+ miles to the gallon. I'd still be driving it if the frame hadn't rusted out.

  • Love my 99 4 door!

I have several Metros and my 1999 4 dr with a 5 speed, A/C, and power steering is the champion! With easy driving, I regularly get 40 mpg around town, more like 45 on the highway. 65 is my top speed. Such an easy car to repair, nearly all the mechanical parts for a major tuneup (including timing belt, water pump, etc) and under $250. from Rock Auto. Were everyone to drive what I have, I doubt we'd be fighting in the Middle East to steal their oil, etc. We'd be totally self sufficient in oil. This car was unfortunately built 'before its time' and was discontinued with cheap fuel costs leading to lead footed driving customers. Think it was only built to meed CAFE numbers for the government. Just bought another 4 door 98 5 speed. The 98 to 2000 have the best fuel injection systems.

  • Best mileage for a non-hybrid car

Base model with manual transmission is a great car! Small, simple, light automobile. (nothing automatic) Gets 45 mpg; better than all but the best hybrids. Automatic transmission is only a three speed and doesn't get such great gas mileage. Be aware that most don't come with air conditioning. Two places to look for problems. First, Metro engines run relatively well, even with low compression in one or more cylinders. Do a compression test. Second, rust rots out the "frame horns" under the front axles. Don't buy if they are severely rusted. It can be dangerous. Almost every one has rusted rocker panels under the doors. This is unsightly but can be fixed and is not a safety hazard.
