our expert's take

Somewhere between the massive mainstream of its full-size sport-utilities — the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL — and the prestigious pinnacle of the Cadillac Escalade, General Motors sees an opportunity.

On that narrow ledge stands the 2001 GMC Yukon Denali and the GMC Yukon XL Denali. They’re upscale, full-size SUVs that neither dabble in the mainstream nor wade in the luxury stream.

Launched about three years ago, the Denali SUVs have found their niche, reaching about 35,000 customers so far. And the all-new 2001 versions, on sale shortly, should extend that recognition, said Denny O’Donnell, the Yukon brand manager for General Motors’ GMC division.

“The Denali’s been a pretty fair success for us,” O’Donnell said. “It’s pretty much a recognized name.”

Los Angeles magazine recently named it as a hot vehicle in Southern California. “We were quite tickled at that,” he said.

The Yukon Denali is 198.9 inches long, the same as the 2002 Cadillac Escalade. The Yukon XL Denali is 219.3 inches long. Both are four-door, four-wheel-drive vehicles with a 320-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8.

Standard equipment includes third-row seating; the AutoRide real-time dampening suspension system with automatic load leveling; front and rear air conditioning, a Bose Acoustimass audio system with 11 speakers and a six-disc CD changer; dual front and side air bags; fog lamps; the OnStar navigation system; leather seats; and a towing package.

In fact, O’Donnell said, options are few. Buyers chose from five colors, decide whether they want a sunroof and, if they’re buying an XL model, whether they want second-row bucket seats.

“The truck was really done for Yukon and Suburban customers who would come in and they’d just check everything that was available. And if we had more, they wanted more,” he said.

The exterior of the Denali models have a cleaner, uncluttered look than do the basic Yukons. Most distinctive is the grille with hundreds of small (15 millimeter) air outlets, which have both a functional (engine cooling) and a design (they look cool) role.

“It still has an imposing look,” O’Donnell said. “When you see one coming up behind you in the rear-view mirror, we want people to go, `Whoa, something’s back there.’ …”

While the Denalis share many features with the Escalade, there’s enough differences — appearance, engine and more — to keep them separate in buyer’s minds, O’Donnell said.

And Cadillac buyers and GMC buyers are very different, he said.

“We’re a truck company. We’re proud of that fact that these are trucks,” he said.

That’s why GMC will emphasize the capability of the Denalis, their towing ability, their heavy-duty automatic transmission and their all-wheel-drive systems.

Plus, the ride is much improved on this generation of GM full-size pickups and SUVs.

“These trucks, and most trucks, for a long time have had lots o f capability,” O’Donnell said. “You can load them up, and carry a lot of junk, but they haven’t always been very much fun to drive. The new trucks are a gas to drive.”

The base Yukon XL Denali will be priced at $48,215. The shorter Yukon Denali will be $46,680.

absolute soldier in the field, looking for a heffer hauler this sob can handle that extra tongue weight. Super cool supercharger sounds coming from the tranny but I think that was part of the luxury package.

  • Most reliable and safe car we've ever owned.

We bought this Yukon new 20 years ago and still love its reliability. Great in snow when we lived North. Now, its used for pleasure in a warmer climate and for driving on the beach.

  • We are the original owners…

Love my Yukon… 178,000 miles… I am the original owner… It was saying anniversary gift from my husband… He passed away in 2015… I have put $7000 into the truck new tires, $1000, fuel pump under the gas tank $1100 , Brake lines radiator power steering pump all in the same week 1700 Axle seals… Cooler to the power steering pump… Upper and lower belts… Repainted it completely tailgate had rusted 1800… And a few other repairs… Today it needs nothing To my knowledge… No oil or trans leaks. As a widow who really can’t afford a new car I would love to keep it… But I am afraid about dependability and being stuck somewhere… I totally love my truck… My question is should I keep it? I still love it I just can’t afford an engine or transmission if it doesn’t go to 300,000… I am too young to collect my husband Social Security yet so can’t afford it for another three years to get a car

  • Very reliable car.

I purchased a used 2001 GMC Yukon with a lot of options. I'm a big guy, 6'3" and big-boned, with two younger children that require car seats. There is still some room behind me with the seat back up all of the ways. The features and smart key are a nice touch.

  • Great SUV for the price

I enjoyed this vehicle and all around comfort and reliability. The only down fall was the performance. It was equipped with the 4.8L V8 and didn?t have much go and really liked drinking the fuel.

  • It Keeps on Running!

I purchased my Yukon new in 2001 and I have always run synthetic oil in it. It now has 174,000 miles on it, burns no oil, and it will outrun any econo-car at the red light. I get 17 miles to the gallon driving to and from work with the 285 hp 5.3 motor (and I keep my foot into it...jack-rabbit starts and racing every other car on the long bridges!). I love the way this car drives. Yes it drives like a car and NOT like a truck. It is now 10 years old and the only repairs I have had are the passenger window motor and a transmission rebuild at about 110k miles (too much racing I suppose!)--Great vehicle and I plan to keep it for many years to come.

  • Love my Yukon

I have owed this vehicle since new, 140K miles later my Yukon still feels like new. The drive is smooth, the room and comfort is incomparable. My kids love our car and even after buying a smaller SUV as a second vehicle they prefer to ride on the Yukon. I have had no major issues with this vehicle, and get many compliments on how nice it still looks and rides.

  • Very good big SUV

I bought this used with 36000 miles and now has 186000 miles. Tough SUV. Pretty good reliability, comfort on long hauls, will carry a big load, and trailer big loads. Just a very good American work horse.
