10 Biggest News Stories of the Month: Ford Maverick Gets More Mileage Than Tesla Model Y, Model 3

How could a gas-powered pickup truck — albeit a hybrid — such as the Ford Maverick efficiently outpace the likes of long-range electric luminaries like the Tesla Model Y and Model 3? Simple: when the competition isn’t on the highway but on our countdown of Cars.com’s most popular news articles from the past month. Readers pumped us for information on how the 2022 Maverick hybrid in our fleet of long-term test vehicles is faring in fuel economy after four months of ownership and nearly 2,200 miles of driving.

In the most read article in June, we document six fuel fill-ups totaling more than 65 gallons and about $354. Average gas mileage over all that driving worked out to 33 mpg, but Cars.com editors observed as high as 39 mpg on a long road trip, and a bitterly cold Chicago winter may partly be to blame for the lackluster returns. Fill up on the full fuel-economy report by following the link below to the No. 1 news story of the month, and for more on our Maverick, continue down to No. 8 to learn how we went about choosing a new bed cover for the truck — an addition that could have a positive aerodynamic impact on future gas-mileage reports.
As for the aforementioned Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan, you’ll find them right at the top of our third-place story this month, Cars.com’s 17th edition of the American-Made Index — our annual quest to determine the most American-made car you’ll find on a dealer lot for the current model year. AMI rankings are determined by a proprietary methodology that considers five major criteria: location of final assembly, percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, countries of origin for all available engines, countries of origin for all available transmissions and U.S. manufacturing workforce.
The Teslas from the Texas-based electric carmaker may not be mindblowing to see topping this list — nor would the Model X SUV and Model S sedan in tow at Nos. 5 and 6, as well as the No. 3-ranked Lincoln Corsair SUV or No. 7-ranked Jeep Cherokee SUV. But 40% of the AMI’s top 10 occupied by Japanese automaker Honda might just challenge your Uncle Chet’s perception of what constitutes an “American” car: The Honda Passport SUV checks in at No. 4, while the Ridgeline pickup truck, Odyssey minivan and Pilot SUV occupy the remainder of the top 10.
For the full roster of the 95 most American models for the 2022 model year (and all the supporting evidence you need to successfully debate your point with Uncle Chet), follow the link below to this month’s No. 3 news story.
