Today at the Texas State Fair, GM will debut heavy-duty editions of its all-new 2007 trucks. The 2500HD and 3500HD Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra include dual rear-wheel configurations and both two- and four-wheel drive. They look just as tough on the outside and comfortable on the inside as the base versions introduced earlier this month.
There are three cab styles, regular, extended and crew cab, and three bed lengths, standard, long and dually long. Engine choices include a 6.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine that produces 312 hp and 373 pounds-feet of torque and a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel with 365 hp and 660 pounds-feet of torque. Both engines come with six-speed automatic transmissions.
Maximum towing with the gasoline engine is rated at 13,000 pounds; 16,700 pounds when equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch. Mileage figures weren’t released, but GM says they are “segment leading,” which usually means marginally better than the nearest competitor.
Prices haven’t been announced yet for the heavy-duty trucks, but they should arrive at dealerships in early 2007. While, the truck segment might be shrinking, buyers of heavy-duty variants require the type of towing these vehicles can provide, and we don’t see that need disappearing anytime soon.
