2008 Maybach Type 62: What's New

Vehicle Overview
Maybach has two versions of its flagship Type 62 model: the Type 62 and an even quicker Type 62 S, whose thunderous V-12 generates 604 horsepower — 54 more horses than the Type 62.

Maybach was one of the world’s most exquisite nameplates in the 1920s and ’30s. The original company was founded by Karl Maybach — the son of Wilhelm Maybach, who developed the first Mercedes.

The Maybach brand returned in 2003 in the form of two closely related ultraluxury sedans: the regular Type 57 and the extended-length Type 62. The 57 is covered separately in Cars.com’s Research section. Each model designation indicates the car’s length in meters: 5.73 for the Type 57 and 6.17 for the Type 62. Special technical features include an electronic braking system and an Airmatic Dual Control air suspension.

It takes nearly five months to construct and deliver Maybachs, which are sold through Mercedes-Benz dealerships.

Exterior
According to the manufacturer, Maybach styling balances classic and avant-garde features. The doors, hood and fenders are made of aluminum. Maybach says a primary goal was to deliver an “entirely new definition of first class.” An optional panoramic glass rear roof is electrotransparent and capable of altering the amount of light that enters the cabin.

Twelve body colors are available, and two-tone paint schemes can be specified. Bi-xenon headlights are standard. The Type 62 is 242.5 inches long overall, has a 150.7-inch wheelbase and rides on 19-inch wheels. The Type 62 S sports revised exterior trimmings, a tighter suspension and 20-inch wheels.

Interior
As many as 100 items inside the Maybach are trimmed in exotic woods. Buyers can mix options with the immense standard-equipment list in numerous combinations to suit specific tastes. Available accessories include a luggage set, a sterling silver champagne goblet, a humidor and a golf bag, among other amenities. Buyers can choose from six Grand Nappa leather colors and three types of wood. An available Business Package includes wireless internet and an onboard color printer.

Occupants can luxuriate in fully reclining rear seats. A television unit with a 9.5-inch TFT flat screen includes a DVD player. Interior features also include four-zone climate control with two air-conditioning units, a refrigerated compartment, a cordless phone with two handsets, and a 21-speaker Bose Dolby audio system.

The Type 62 S offers piano lacquer and carbon fiber trim with exclusive black or white leather. Integrated leather piping comes in black or silver.

Many custom options are available, including replacing the wood trim with granite. Gold — real gold, not some plastic knockoff — is also available as a interior trim option. Maybach says its facility in Sindelfingen, Germany, is able to meet almost any special request.

Under the Hood
Breathing with the assistance of twin turbochargers, the 5.5-liter V-12 produces 550 hp and 663 pounds-feet of torque. It teams with a five-speed automatic transmission. In the Type 62 S, a 6.0-liter V-12 generates 604 hp and a stupefying 738 pounds-feet of torque. It also uses a five-speed automatic.

Safety
Adaptive front airbags, four side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are standard. Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are also standard.
