2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata Up Close

The 2009 MX-5 Miata is technically the 20th anniversary model, because the affordable roadster hit the market in 1989, though it was a 1990 model. The 2009 is the first light restyling of the third generation, which came out in 2005 to reviews that were mixed, although more about its design than its performance. The restyled nose is an improvement, in my opinion, as it extends lower and its headlights are more interesting in shape. I’m not sure if the five-point (smiling) grille is an improvement over the 2008 version, but it’s a little less extreme than the 2010 Mazda3’s, which resembles a clown, and that makes me uncomfortable.

The rear bumper also extends lower and wider, with a more prominent crease on the side. The tailpipes are now flush with the bumper. Most of the other exterior changes, apart from the new wheel designs, are indistinguishable to my eye. Mazda says they’re mostly for aerodynamics and include the side sills and taillights.

The seats are new, with a bit more side bolstering. I’d have to drive it to know how well they hold you in place and how comfortable they are overall, but they don’t feel too restrictive to sit in. Mazda says the interior materials are improved, particularly in terms of feel. I think this is true, but I’m disappointed to see the piano-black finish replaced by a metallic look. Mazda was smart to avoid the unconvincing-faux-metal trap, and while this is by no means a bad example, I would have stayed with the black lacquer look.
