The 2010 Volkswagen Golf and GTI are just hitting dealer lots now, but one model everyone is anticipating is the high-mileage diesel TDI. The EPA has released ratings for the diesel at 30/41 mpg city/highway for the six-speed manual and 30/42 mpg for the automatic. Those numbers are identical to the Jetta TDI.
The Golf TDI isn’t a stripped down model either, so if you were hoping for an inexpensive hybrid competitor you’ll have to keep waiting. The two-door TDI starts at $21,990, before a $700 destination charge, but the gasoline Golf’s sticker is $17,490. The Honda Insight starts at $19,800, and the larger Jetta TDI starts at $22,660.
The Golf TDI’s added standard content compared to the base model includes: 17-inch wheels, sport suspension, fog lights, six-disc stereo with touch-screen display, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, center armrest and floormats.
