2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe: Up Close

Earlier yesterday, I had a chance to check out Mercedes’ latest creation, the E-Class coupe. Its proportions are more akin to the six-figure CL-Class than the smaller, tubbier CLK, and if you dig the CL you’ll probably like its latest sibling. I feel the same way about it as I did about the sedan: Apart from those quad headlights, the face looks sharp. The tail, on the other hand, is derivative of half a dozen others.

Cabin materials are similar to the sedan’s — certainly good, but not quite class-leading. Backseat entry is easy enough, with front seats that automatically motor forward when you fold the seatbacks to get to the second row. The front seats motor back to their original spot when you reposition the seatbacks, no buttons required. Nice. As the long side windows suggest, space in the rear isn’t bad: I had plenty of legroom, and the seats have their own cutouts and side bolsters. Headroom, however, is marginal.

Really, I wanted to see Mercedes reprise the 1998 to 2002 CLK’s classic look. The current CLK doesn’t do it justice. Neither does the E-Class coupe. For the luxury-car market, tough times demand truly scintillating design. Technology and performance notwithstanding, the E-Class and its two-door sibling left me underwhelmed.
