We’ll be test-driving Hyundai’s new Sonata Hybrid and turbo models later this week, but the company announced today the pricing on the turbo editions of its popular sedan.

Buyers of the SE and Limited trims will be able to opt for the turbo powerplant at starting prices of $24,145 and $27,045, respectively. For the SE that’s a $1,600 price difference over the base four-cylinder engine; the Limited turbo costs $1,750 more. Prices do not include a $720 destination fee.

Competitors like Honda’s Accord and Toyota’s Camry offer a four-cylinder and a V-6 option instead of a turbocharged four-cylinder. The V-6s aren’t cheap. The 2011 Toyota Camry LE V6 starting price of $24,890 is $3,715 more than the four-cylinder LE’s $21,175 price.

Hyundai’s value proposition continues with the mileage. The turbo produces 274 horsepower and gets 22/33 mpg city/highway. It also achieves these numbers on regular unleaded fuel. Going back to that Camry comparison, the Sonata turbo has more power than the V-6 Camry while getting the same mileage as the four-cylinder Camry.

The turbo’s driving experience will make up the minds most car shoppers who have flocked to the four-cylinder Sonata since it went on sale earlier this year. The sedate Sonata seems to be doing just fine. We wonder if the added power will bring even more folks to the fold. We’ll find out when the model goes on sale later this year.
