Today in Munich, BMW revealed the official name of its new sub-brand, i. The company didn’t just reveal the i namplate, but the first two models that will be produced in 2013.

The i3 is the new name for the Mega City Vehicle, an all-electric small car. The bigger news is that the company will build an i8 based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept that blew us away last year. That sports car will be a plug-in hybrid.

While this will be a BMW sub-brand, these two cars will not share platforms with any existing BMW or Mini. The vehicles will feature an all-aluminum chassis and a high-strength carbon fiber-reinforced plastic passenger compartment.

These cars will be sold in the U.S., but no other time frame besides 2013 was given. A few more sketches of the two cars are below.
