2014 BMW Z4: What's Changed

  • Which should you buy, 2013 or 2014? Minimal changes mean go for the 2013.

How quickly time flies. The current BMW Z4 will enter its sixth model year next spring, and BMW is giving the folding-hardtop roadster a few minor updates for 2014.

The center air vents and optional navigation display have glossier frames; new optional wood trim, restyled 18-inch alloy wheels and updates to BMW's ConnectedDrive multimedia program are also in the mix. A new Hyper Orange Package includes Valencia Orange metallic paint, orange Alcantara door-panel trim and orange-colored contrast stitching with an orange and white center stripe down the seats. It replaces last year's Citrus Yellow Package.

The Z4's folding hardtop can drop at speeds up to 25 mph, taking 19 seconds to open. Like before, an M Sport Package has restyled bumpers, sportier seats and other cabin treatments. Engines carry over, ranging from a 240-horsepower, turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder (Z4 sDriv28i) to a turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder making 300 hp (sDrive35i) or 335 hp (sDrive35is). With a manual or automatic, all three scoot the Z4 to 60 mph in well under 6 seconds, with the sDrive35is hitting the mark in just 4.8 seconds.

The 2014 Z4 goes on sale next spring. Barring a big price drop, we don't think the changes are enough to warrant waiting. Feel free to throw a set of surprise keys under the tree now — if you live in a warmer state, that is.
